Highest visit under air raid sirens in front of St. Michael's Cathedral in Kiev: US President Joe Biden made a surprise arrival in the Ukrainian capital on Monday - his eighth visit to Ukraine, but his first since the Russian war of aggression began almost a year ago .
There he met his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelenskyj.
Joe Biden, US President: "There is absolutely no doubt about US support for Ukraine in the fight against Russia's brutal attack. It's good to be back in Kyiv."
Biden reiterated that the US would stand by Ukraine for as long as necessary.
The visit is a clear signal to the government in Kiev – and to that in Moscow.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine: "This is extremely important for us. Thank you for coming, Mr. President. This is a great moment of support for Ukraine."
Biden announced further deliveries of weapons, including artillery ammunition and anti-tank systems.
Overall, Biden promised an additional half a billion dollars in US aid, but he continues to refuse the delivery of fighter jets.
After his visit to Kiev, the US President wants to travel to Poland and meet Polish President Andrzej Duda there on Tuesday, and the heads of state and government of several Central and Eastern European NATO members on Wednesday.
So more gestures of solidarity a few days before the one-year anniversary of the Russian invasion will follow.
