(CNN Spanish) –

HBO's "The Last of Us" series continues to amaze the audience.

The project, which premiered on Sunday, January 15, is broadcast weekly on the HBO channel and through its streaming service, HBO Max.

Both services are part of Warner Bros. Discovery, CNN's parent company.

Contrary to the models of

streaming

companies , the series releases a new chapter every week.

In total there will be 9 episodes in the first season of this story.

HBO renews its hit series "The Last of Us" for a second season

What is "The Last of Us" about?

The series is based on a video game of the same name that came out a decade ago and was made available on the PlayStation.

The story tells of life in an apocalyptic world, after a fungus, Cordyceps, achieved human-to-human infection.

advertising

The infection occurs through a bite, turning its host into an extremely fast and aggressive zombie.

In real life, the Cordyceps fungus only infects insects.

  • This is the life and career of Pedro Pascal, protagonist of The Last of Us: movies, series, family

The story of the series adapted for television begins in 2003, when the first infections began in Austin, Texas.

Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) loses his daughter while they try to flee from the chaos that was generated by the first infected.

The series fast-forwards two decades, taking Joel to Boston, where he lives in a quarantine zone heavily guarded by military forces.

Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is one of the few people immune to infection by the Cordyceps fungus.

Possibly she would be the key to create a vaccine against the disease which is, so far (in the series), incurable.

What are the characters in the series?

Episode 1: "When You're Lost in the Darkness"

Pedro Pascal plays Joel Miller, one of the two protagonists of "The Last of Us."

The character is a native of Texas and had his daughter, Sarah, at a very young age.

Joel is one of the survivors of the main outbreak of infections, which occurred on September 26, 2003, the day the character turned 36 years old.

After the death of his daughter, Joel's character changes and he becomes a more sour man, who does not show feelings.

However, throughout the episodes, there are moments where Joel breaks down emotionally.

Sarah

Sarah Miller is Joel's daughter.

She is a teenager whose death, at the hands of the army, leaves a mark on Joel's personality.

The character is played by Nico Parker.

The girl died in her father's arms as the two fled Austin, Texas, following the outbreak of infections.

For her birthday, as a gift, Sarah has one of her father's watches repaired.

Two decades after his daughter's death, Joel is seen wearing the same watch, a sign of the piece's sentimental value and connection to his daughter.

Tess

Anna Torv plays Tess in the television version of "The Last of Us."

She is one of the survivors and Joel's partner in the quarantine zone in Boston.

Both Tess and Joel are smugglers of goods and other products.

He is the one who leads Joel to Ellie, the teenager who is apparently immune to the infection caused by the Cordyceps fungus.

Tess's story ends in episode number two, after being attacked by one of the clickers.

She sacrifices herself so Joel and Ellie can follow her path.

Ellie

Bella Ramsey plays Ellie Williams, the other protagonist of "The Last of Us."

Ellie is a teenager who seems to be immune to infection by the Cordyceps fungus, one of the few people who resists the disease.

As a person, Ellie is irreverent, she has had to live in the dark and in confinement.

This becomes evident in the second episode when she, Joel and Tess leave the quarantine zone.

Marlene

Ellie comes into the lives of Joel and Tess through Marlene (in the photo is the actress on the left), the leader of the Fireflies, a kind of revolutionary group that fights against the rules of the military that maintain the area. of quarantine.

Together with his group they search for a solution to the outbreak that has stopped the world for 20 years.

That is why Marlene puts Ellie in the hands of Tess and Joel, who could be the only person who has the power to put an end to the tragedy.

Episode 2: "Infected"

Dr. Ratna

In the second episode of "The Last of Us" we briefly move to Jakarta, days before the violent outbreak that changed the world (in the video game and the series).

In that

flashback

we meet Dr. Ratna, a professor of mycology at the University of Indonesia.

The character is played by Christine Hakim.

In the episode, Dr. Ratna examines a woman who is infected with the fungus and tells authorities that there is no cure for the disease that Cordyceps is causing.

Perhaps the only solution, she says, is to wipe out the entire population of Jakarta with a bomb.

In the episode it is not known what finally happens with the doctor or with Jakarta.

Episode 3: "Long, Long Time"

Bill

(Credit: HBO)

Bill is a survivor who managed to isolate himself from civilization and remain healthy outside of the quarantine zone, thanks to his end-time bunker.

He is a solitary man, very reserved and not very social.

In the bunker he managed to store weapons, utensils for basic needs, among other things.

He also built a whole security system with cameras and deadly traps that were capable of killing not only infected people but also anyone who dared to trespass the neighborhood guarded by Bill.

The character is played by Nick Offerman.

Her life changes with the arrival of Frank.

Frank

Frank, like Bill, is a Cordyceps survivor.

On his way to Boston he falls into one of Bill's traps, who lives in Lincoln, Massachusetts.

After proving that he was not infected, Frank asks Bill for something to eat because he had not eaten for several days.

Despite not being very convinced at all, Bill serves Frank a plate with food hunted and grown by himself.

He also offers her a bath and clean clothes.

The chemistry between the two awakens after Frank and Bill play the piano.

The men begin a relationship that lasted at least a decade.

Frank is played by Murray Bartlett (you'll also recognize him from being the hotel manager on "The White Lotus," also on HBO).

Frank's personality is completely the opposite of Bill's: he is friendly, social and in his quest to connect with people he made a friendship with Tess, through radio transmissions.

That friendship led him to invite Tess and Joel over for lunch together.

As a result of that meeting, Joel and Bill form an atypical friendship which will bear fruit in the midst of a bitter farewell.

Episode 4: “Please Hold To My Hand”

Kathleen

(Credit: HBO)

In this episode we meet Kathleen, the leader of a revolutionary group in Kansas City.

The character is played by Melanie Lynskey.

This character was created specifically for the series, it is one of those that did not exist in the video game.

She is one of the antagonists in "The Last of Us," Mazin and Druckmann said on the series' official podcast.

Lynskey told Variety that her character lacks humanity.

“She's able to do things that are pretty brutal without really batting an eye,” Lynskey tells the publication.

Perry

Perry is Kathleen's right-hand man in the Kansas City revolutionary group.

The character is played by Jeffrey Pierce, who also provided the voice for him in the video game but for another character.

In the video game, Pierce played Joel's brother, Tommy.

Episode 5: “Endure and survive”

Henry and Sam Burrel

We already saw Henry and Sam right at the end of the previous episode, which ended in a tremendous abrupt ending.

Henry and Sam are two brothers who are being hunted by the ruthless Kathleen and her movement.

The reason?

Henry was a PHAEDRA collaborator who turned in Michael, Kathleen's brother, to obtain medicine to treat his brother, Sam, who had leukemia.

Michael was the founder of the revolutionary group that Kathleen now leads.

The brothers are originally from Kansas City, the city where Joel and Ellie were passing through and where they were trapped after a confrontation with the revolutionary group.

Sam, Henry, Joel and Ellie's path crosses unexpectedly.

They all need each other.

Knowing Kansas City like the back of their hand, the brothers offer Joel and Ellie a way to escape the city: through tunnels.

However the plan fails in the end.

Sam is bitten during a battle between clickers and Kathleen's revolutionary group.

The next day, the boy tries to attack Ellie and is killed by her brother.

Realizing what he did, Henry commits suicide.

Henry is played by Lamar Johnson.

Keivonn Montreal Woodard brings Sam to life.

Episode 6: “Kin”

Tommy Miller

(Credit: HBO)

In this episode we see Tommy, Joel's brother, who is played by Gabriel Luna, in the post-pandemic world.

We first saw Tommy in the first episode, when the fungus outbreak broke out.

According to show creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, Tommy is the purpose of Joel's fight as he has to have someone to save.

Joel has mentioned Tommy in several episodes and in this episode we learn a little more about his story after he changed the world after being infected by the Cordyceps fungus.

Both Tommy and Joel made decisions in their lives to survive, including killing people.

Tommy —who became part of the Fireflies— took refuge in the town of Jackson in Wyoming where he met his wife, Maria.

Both are expecting their first child.

Maria Miller

After crossing what they call the "river of death", Ellie and Joel meet a group of people on horseback who protect Jackson from the arrival of anyone who may be infected.

One of the people pointing menacingly at Joel and Ellie is Maria.

The character is played by Rutina Wesley.

Maria comes from Nebraska where she was a district attorney.

She is one of the leaders of this town that seems to be cut off from all civilization.

Joel and Maria have a painful aspect of their lives in common: they lost a son at the start of the Cordyceps outbreak.

This glimpse into his life is revealed when Ellie searches for Maria at her home, after settling in Jackson, and sees a small memorial that Tommy and Maria made for Kevin and Sarah, Joel's teenage daughter who died in the first episode. .
