"Don't let yourself be fooled": man calculates with "senseless" electric car invention

Stuttgart - It is well known that an electrical device should not get wet.

Accordingly, one might assume that it would be difficult to charge an electric vehicle outdoors in the rain.

Various options are therefore offered for sale on the Internet, either to protect the charging cap of the e-car or to protect the wall box from the rain.

The prices for a "rain protection cover" for the e-car connection are around 16 euros, for a cover of the wall box prices are more likely to be around 50 euros, as reported by BW24.

But does rain actually pose a risk to the connection and cable when charging an e-car?

"Don't be fooled," says a TikTok user about a short clip in which someone connects the cable of a charging station to the charging socket of an electric car under a protective film.

"Why protect the charging port from rain if it's waterproof anyway?".

Another TikTok user explained how to comfortably drive past a traffic jam in an e-car.

Rain protection is intended to protect the charging ports of e-cars from getting wet - but these are waterproof anyway

When a Tesla driver mistook the brake and accelerator and ended up in a pool with his electric car, the water pressure posed a danger, but the battery is adequately protected against moisture.

However, since most public charging stations are positioned outdoors without a roof, one could assume that rain could clog the cables and connections and cause short circuits.

"The rain cover made of durable nylon material and a PVC coating protects your EV charging plug so that you can charge in any weather," is why a rain cover offered on Amazon says.

However, an article on the blog of the energy supplier EnBW points out that charging an electric car is generally safe even in rain and thunderstorms.

"Insulation, circuit breakers and covers on charging plugs ensure the best possible protection," it says.

"Charging stations and wall boxes also have overvoltage protection to compensate for overvoltage impulses in the event of a lightning strike and to prevent damage." To protect your own safety, however, you should not charge your electric car during a thunderstorm, even with a rain cover.

Netz makes fun of rain protection for e-cars: "So that the electricity doesn't flow out"

According to the EnBW blog entry, charging stations are even protected against extreme cases such as flooding.

However, the ADAC advises against driving through excessively high water with an electric car, as the electronics can be damaged under certain circumstances despite the insulation.

However, the rain protection covers for the charging port that are available in abundance on the Internet do not protect against such damage.

"Senseless e-car invention", writes the TikTok user.

Under the short clip, users make fun of the invention:

  • "That's a joke, is not it?"

  • "Well, where I fill up with diesel, it's always covered."

  • "Scratches in the paintwork are inevitable."

  • "For the winter so the cable doesn't freeze."

  • "It's to keep the electricity from leaking out."

  • "So the car doesn't connect to Bluetooth."

  • "Someone will buy this."

On Amazon, however, users are consistently convinced of the products and describe the ease of use and reliable protection against rain and snow.

Whether you really need such a protective measure depends on the respective conditions.

"This is for people who play it safe," writes one user.

What bothers many e-car drivers much more than getting wet when charging are charging station blockers.

An e-car driver therefore even warns against buying an electric model.
