At least 40 people have been killed in floods and landslides caused by heavy rains in the southeastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo.

A previous toll reported yesterday that 36 people were killed as a result of floods and landslides in the state.

According to Agence France-Presse, at least 39 people were killed as a result of floods and landslides, as a landslide swept about fifty homes in the city of Sao Sebastiao, located about 200 kilometers from the state of Sao Paulo, and the only victim who fell outside this city is a little girl. She spent in the coastal city of Ubatuba to the north.

The authorities warned that the death toll is likely to rise, as 40 other people are still missing.

Footage from Sao Sebastiao, broadcast by local television channels and shared by accounts on social media, showed entire neighborhoods flooded with water, homes destroyed by landslides, highways cut off with dust and mud torrents, and cars that fell on trees and electricity poles.

The authorities declared a state of emergency in five coastal cities, where landslides swept through the main road networks, making access very difficult.
