Several U.S. senators and representatives proposed a bill on February 18 calling for the closure of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in the United States. They also pointed out that Hong Kong’s one country, two systems have been severely interfered by Beijing, and the Economic and Trade Office has become a Chinese diplomatic propaganda agency.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded on the 21st that Hong Kong is the source of the United States' largest economic and trade surplus, and the United States can only lift a stone to shoot itself in the foot.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on the 21st that the relevant congressmen have always been anti-China. He said that the Economic and Trade Office is an overseas economic and trade organization set up by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government. Cooperation is a matter of mutual benefit and win-win results.

He pointed out that Hong Kong is the source of the United States' largest economic and trade surplus, and the United States can only lift a stone to shoot itself in the foot.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio, who participated in the proposal, previously issued a statement through his office, saying that the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office enjoys a series of privileges and immunities in the United States, but the premise is that Hong Kong is not controlled by Beijing, and the "Hong Kong National Security Law" is implemented. Afterwards the situation changed.

The bill requires the President to prove whether the three Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices located in Washington, New York and San Francisco are worthy of extending the current privileges and immunities within 30 days of the enactment of the bill. If the president agrees to preserve the privilege, Congress has the power to veto it.
