The latest JD Power survey returns the crown of reliability in the luxury category to Lexus. It is followed by Genesis and Cadillac. Kia leads the reliability of popular brands

Vehicles have become more reliable in recent years despite the extensive use of technology that provides quite a few breakdowns, according to the American research institute JD Power, which publishes the new Vehicle Reliability Report for 2023, which reviews the reliability of models marketed in the US in their first three years on the road.

According to data published by the research institute, the credibility of the popular brands continues to improve and opens an ever larger gap with the luxury brands.

The average number of breakdowns in the popular brands (Mass Market) last year was 182 entries into the garage for every 100 cars compared to 190 entries into the garage the year before.

The breakdown average among the luxury brands is significantly higher and stands at 205 breakdowns per 100 cars, and in fact the gap today between the reliability of the luxury models and the popular models is the highest since the research institute began testing 34 years ago.

The reason for this, of course, lies in the combination of a variety of new technologies and state-of-the-art systems, first in the luxury models and only after a few years in popular models, after all kinds of "childhood diseases" have already been solved.

Most of the entries to the garage, by the way, were recorded due to malfunctions in the multimedia systems, various sensors and, of course, the car's batteries.

According to the survey data, in the luxury market this year Lexus (in the main photo) returned to the lead with 133 breakdowns per 100 cars, followed by Genesis with 144 breakdowns (last year it was ranked first).

For Lexus, this is the 10th time in the last 15 years that it has won first place.

Cadillac is surprisingly in third place with 173 breakdowns followed by BMW with 184 breakdowns.

Among popular brands, Kia has been leading for 3 years in a row with 152 breakdowns per 100 cars, while Buick (in America it's a popular brand...) ranks second with 159 breakdowns, Chevrolet with 162 breakdowns and Mitsubishi with 167 breakdowns.

Somewhat surprisingly, Toyota ranks next with 168 breakdowns per 100 cars.

According to corporations, by the way, Toyota Lexus leads with 6 models that won the "most reliable in their category" award, while BMW and General Motors hold four awards each, while the Hyundai concern, which also includes Kia and Genesis, received three awards, all for Kia models (Sportaz ', Optima and Forte).

When you get down to the depth of the data and look by model and not by the breakdown average for the manufacturer, then the pair of cars that enjoyed the fewest breakdowns among all the models are the Toyota C-HR and the Lexus RX with the same breakdown average of 111 breakdowns per 100 cars.

More than 30,000 car owners in the American market, who have owned 2020 models for three years of ownership, participated in the survey.

The study was conducted between the months of August and November 2022. The study focuses on the problems that vehicle owners experienced during this time period, and its results are used by vehicle manufacturers around the world in order to develop and produce better vehicles,
