So far, the migration advice centers in Africa have served to help returnees from Europe. Workers are now to be recruited there in a targeted manner.

Federal Labor Minister Hubertus Heil and Federal Development Minister Svenja Schulze (both SPD) announced during their visit to Ghana today that the migration advice center there is to be used more to recruit and train skilled workers.

SPIEGEL has received a corresponding declaration from the two ministers in advance.

150 million euros over three years

All in all, this type of new "centres for migration and development" will be set up in nine countries and will be financed by the Development Ministry with 150 million euros over three years.

In addition to Ghana, facilities are planned in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Nigeria, Iraq, Pakistan and Indonesia.

The previous centers primarily supported returnees from Europe in creating prospects in their home country.

Because of the labor shortage in Germany, they are now to be realigned.

"While many countries, such as Ghana, are faced with the challenge of creating jobs for their young, growing population, demographic change in Germany means that we desperately need workers in many areas," the development minister said in a statement Schulze.

They want to turn the »one-way street into a two-way street«.

Migration should be managed so that it is mutually beneficial.

“It is important to inform the countries on the spot about regular migration routes and to provide information about the requirements of the European labor market,” writes Labor Minister Heil.

Securing skilled workers is »securing prosperity for our country«.

Heil and Schulze have been on a multi-day trip to Africa since Monday, and the Ivory Coast is also on the itinerary alongside Ghana.
