The police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South recorded more accidents in 2022 after two quieter Corona years.

The number of two-wheelers has increased in particular.

District

– The year 2022 was marked by many traffic accidents, some of them serious.

In August, for example, a car driver could only be found dead after falling down a slope with his car in the lower Sudelfeld.

In the same month, a motorcyclist died between Schliersee and Hausham, and just a few weeks later another in Warngau.

The police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South summarized these and other accidents in a traffic accident report for the past year.

This shows an increase in the number of accidents after the statistics had recorded a decrease in the Corona years 2020 and 2021.

However, the figures have not reached the level of the comparison year 2019.

In addition to the city and district of Rosenheim, the police headquarters is also responsible for the district of Miesbach and seven other districts in southern Upper Bavaria: Berchtesgadener Land, Traunstein, Altötting, Mühldorf, Weilheim-Schongau, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen are also included.

Together with 60 kilometers of motorway in the so-called transmission areas of the city and district of Munich, in Starnberg and Erding, the officials look after a total of around 15,500 kilometers of road network.

Police name main causes

In 2022, the police there counted 36,659 traffic accidents, of which 2,953 happened in the Miesbach district.

Compared to the previous year, the number rose by 5.3 percent, in the district by 6.7 percent.

"All accident groups have increased, i.e. accidents involving personal injury as well as accidents involving property damage," reports the Executive Committee.

There were 82 fatalities in the catchment area (five more than in the previous year), in the Miesbach district there were six – one less than in 2021. The police attribute more than a third of the deaths to “excessive or improper speed”.

"29 people lost their lives on the road because they were driving too fast," the officials emphasize.

In addition, speeders are responsible for 1,388 road users, some of whom were seriously injured.

The police named alcohol as the second main cause of accidents – 684 accidents happened under its influence, 437 people were injured and 14 were killed.

Overall, the number of accidents related to drinking and driving increased by 18.1 percent.

The police submitted 1,824 cases of alcohol and 765 of drug-related offenses to the public prosecutor's office or initiated administrative fines as a misdemeanor.

Both values were lower in the previous year.

Risk groups are changing

The main risk groups, which include cyclists, pedelec riders, pedestrians, motorcyclists, school children, senior citizens and young adults, are particularly at risk.

The latter, between 18 and 24 years of age, were less affected with 2990 accidents than in the previous year (3059).

The number of injuries also fell.

However, eight young people died in 2022 and four in 2021.

Older people over the age of 65 were involved in accidents 4123 times, more often than in the previous year, were injured more often and the number of road deaths rose from 26 to 29. The number of accidents on the way to school also increased – but fortunately no child was killed.

In addition, 1,039 motorcyclists were involved in accidents (previous year: 1,006), and the number of injuries continued to rise.

29 motorcyclists died in the process, 17 in the previous year. The number of pedestrians involved fell, however, and there were fewer deaths.

However, the number of cyclists killed has risen sharply (15 instead of eight), with the number of injuries rising by almost eleven percent to 2,367.

With the exception of the dead, an increase can also be observed for pedelecs.

Almost all of the cyclists and pedelec riders involved were injured.

In the district, the number of all injuries fell from 633 to 600 - a decrease of 5.3 percent, the value in the catchment area rose by 5.6 percent.

Traffic safety should be improved

"The police focus will continue to be in the areas of traffic prevention in the future," explains the Bureau.

Safety on the roads is to be further increased with courses for seniors, traffic lessons, motorcycle prevention events and traffic monitoring.
