This is a first in France, the Léon-Bérard center, center for the fight against cancer in Lyon and Rhône-Alpes, has announced the creation of a research unit dedicated to pediatric palliative care.
This new clinical research unit will aim to create French standards by carrying out quantitative and qualitative studies in the field, in contact with young patients, aged 0 to 25, and their families.
His work will focus on three major areas: exploring the needs and expectations of the patient and caregivers, evaluating the impact of pediatric palliative care resource teams (care pathway, quality of life) and evaluation of therapeutic approaches in a second step.
“
The creation of this team is already a major step forward.
The first step was the creation of pediatric palliative care resource teams, but we cannot stay on their clinical experiences.
We need research to move forward, including in a field as delicate as palliative care and the end of life of children
”, explains doctor Matthias Schell, pediatric oncologist.
The creation of this unit was made possible thanks to a donation of 500,000 euros from Albec (Léon Bérard Regional Association for Cancerous Children).
