A crisp cold snap with snow showers and ice is imminent in Bavaria at the weekend.

But before that, a spectacular weather phenomenon is sweeping across the Free State: Sahara dust is coloring the sky yellowish-red.

Update from February 22, 3:29 p.m .:

A cold snap is imminent throughout Bavaria for the weekend.

Snow is supposed to fall as far as Munich.

But before that, people in the Free State can look forward to a reddish morning sky, as the German Press Agency reports: According to the German Weather Service (DWD), Sahara dust will blow over the Free State on the night of Thursday, February 23.

The concentration is highest in the dark, which is why the weather phenomenon is unlikely to be quite as spectacular.

Nevertheless, it is probably worth taking a look through the window in the morning.

Weather in Bavaria: First a cold snap, then spring is in the house

First report from February 22, 11:36 a.m .:

Munich – “Crazy how a few cooler days in an otherwise extremely warm February are sold here and there as the big onset of winter,” says qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung from

wetter.net

.

In fact, the weather in Bavaria will be up and down in the coming days: After a brief cold snap at the weekend with snow showers and ice, spring is just around the corner.

At the beginning of March it could even get really warm: forecasts speak of up to 21 degrees Celsius in Germany.

With that, winter sports enthusiasts would have to finally say goodbye to winter.

While the Bavarians were spoiled with sunshine and maximum temperatures of up to 20 degrees Celsius in the last few days, the weather will cool down significantly from Friday, February 24th.

“Here and there, the cooling off at the weekend is actually sold as a big onset of winter.

It just gets a little cooler,” says Jung.

So for the time of year it will remain very mild, and yet: "It feels like there will be a huge drop in the weather with a wet and cold two to seven degrees."

German Weather Service: Bitterly cold temperatures and snow as far as Munich

According to the

German weather service,

the Bavarians have to be prepared for rain and lows of three degrees at Chiemsee in the Traunstein district and down to minus one degree in the Franconian low mountain ranges in the night from Friday to Saturday.

Snow and snow showers are also expected in the mountains.

According to the DWD, the Free State will continue with clouds, wind and sleet or snow showers on Saturday.

Between two and eight degrees during the day and bitterly cold temperatures of minus one to minus seven degrees can be expected at night.

The roads could get slippery.

Sunday will remain cool.

The accumulated snow depths up to Saturday evening, February 25th, confirm the trend: according to wetter.net

, it should be white all over southern Bavaria

, south of Munich up to 13 centimeters are not excluded.

And even in the state capital, it can be enough for a light layer of snow.

Weather in early March: "Winter sports season a complete disaster"

But it will be warmer again at the beginning of next week: "From Tuesday, the proportion of sunshine will increase significantly again and we will reach up to 11 or 12 degrees during the day," says

wetter.net

.

Winter could even be over soon: "The current weather maps show massive warming around March 7th." That would mean maximum temperatures of between 15 and 21 degrees throughout the Federal Republic.

Skiers and sledgers who are still hoping for a late onset of winter should probably bury those hopes for good.

Because a March winter is clearly not in sight.

"The winter sports season was a total disaster in the German low mountain ranges," agrees Jung.

Things didn't look any better in the Alps.

And yet the meteorologist warns against hasty extreme forecasts: "We still have to wait and see whether full spring can actually prevail."
