Eighty years ago, in the winter of 1943, the Hungarian Second Army, with its two hundred thousand men, was almost totally annihilated, in appalling conditions, by the Red Army during the Battle of Stalingrad.
The bitterest Magyar defeat since the battle of Mohács in 1526 against the Ottoman troops of Suleiman the Magnificent.
But it was not to commemorate this Hungarian berezina that the Minister of National Defence, Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky, had assembled the troops in Budapest on January 17th.

In this time of danger, the most important thing for the government is the safety of the Hungarian people
," he began.

Along with the acquisition of modern military technologies, the organizational transformation of the armed forces is taking place.
(…) The personnel of the armed forces must also be renewed.”
The generals and senior officers who made up the parterre then had no idea that the revival invoked…
