A worrying number.
In 2022, 1,288 personal accidents took place in the Gironde department, the prefecture services revealed on Thursday.
They caused 1,642 injuries, 3% more than in 2021. The number of people who died on the roads increased by 18% compared to the average of the last five years.

With 86 killed in 83 fatal accidents in 2022, the department has exceeded the threshold of 80 fatal accidents which it had not reached for 10 years
”, deplore the state services.
Gironde is the department of New Aquitaine with the highest number of road deaths, far ahead of Charente-Maritime (55 killed) and Pyrénées-Atlantiques (47 killed).
The majority of victims are men aged 65 or over.
Men are also the main drivers responsible for accidents (85% of the perpetrators presumed responsible for fatal accidents).
More than 4900 speeding tickets per month
The three main causes of fatal accidents are excessive or inappropriate speed (36%), blood alcohol (22%) and inattention (22%).

For three years, the proportion of people who died in urban areas on roads limited to 50km / h remains higher than other categories of the road
", explains the prefecture.
The prefect announces a reinforcement of control operations in all the departments of the region.
In Gironde, the police recorded an average of more than 4,900 speeding violations per month in 2022.

Last year, 376 people died on the roads of New Aquitaine, 29 more than in 2021. This situation is not acceptable
”, underlines the prefect Étienne Guyot.

I call on road users to be careful and responsible.
The police will be particularly present on the roads and will punish dangerous behavior.
