Since the first hours of the earthquake, the ambulance system in Homs was one of the authorities that rushed to achieve emergency response and support the stricken governorates, to provide medical services to the injured and rescue survivors from under the rubble.

Director of Homs Health Directorate, Dr. Musallam al-Atassi, explained in a statement to SANA reporter that immediately after the earthquake occurred, the Directorate raised the readiness of the ambulance and emergency system, public and private hospitals, health centers, and medical and nursing cadres to the maximum level, and sent a team to support the health sector cadres in the governorates of Aleppo and Hama. Specialists, nurses and drivers accompanied by 5 equipped ambulances, in addition to two mobile clinics, and communication with the Lattakia Health Authority to provide response in time of need.

The head of the readiness department and the ambulance and emergency system in the health department of Homs, Dr. Basil Maarouf, stated that within the emergency plan and raising the maximum readiness, human cadres from the city and the countryside were summoned, and rural axes cars were placed in a state of readiness for call when needed, and five ambulances were prepared and kept at the headquarters of the system in anticipation of any emergency.

He pointed out that the team that went from Homs to Aleppo was the first medical support to reach it, as it was involved in coordination with its Health Directorate to assist in surgical work in the National Hospital, while the two mobile clinics went to several places in a row, to provide initial medical support outside the hospital, including The psychological aspect of non-critical injuries and of the affected population.

According to Maarouf, the ambulance and emergency system in the city of Aleppo was merged with its counterpart in Homs, to ensure the achievement of rapid response, access to the required place and dealing with developments, especially the aftershocks that occurred after the devastating earthquake and caused the collapse of new buildings, stressing that the work was carried out within an atmosphere of cooperation and feeling. Al-Mutlaq is responsible for executing and recording all movement orders towards collapsed buildings and evacuation orders to hospitals, in addition to regular emergency missions.

The paramedic Ahmed Salloum said that dealing with the injured and affected must be with the highest degree of humanity, accepting their intense emotions and understanding the circumstances they went through, indicating that the ambulance staff remained in the cars to meet the calls received on the number 110, and move directly to the place quickly, as there were cars The ambulance carries out ambulance and evacuation operations, transfers the bodies without a break, and returns to the site of the collapsed building, awaiting the next task and taking into account the feelings of the victims’ families.
