The American coffee giant has launched an innovative series of drinks in Italy with a substance that may cause tasters to raise an eyebrow • At Starbucks they urge: "The new drinks represent the next revolution in the world of coffee"

The American coffee giant Starbucks is currently launching in Italy a series of innovative coffee drinks containing an unexpected ingredient - olive oil.

The name of the series is "Oleato" (Oleato in Italian) which means: "oiled".

The variety of coffees in the series contain a spoonful of cold-pressed Partann virgin olive oil.

The oil is added to the chain's well-known Arabica coffee.

The new series was launched, as mentioned, in Italy and will also arrive later this year in the United States, Great Britain, Japan and the Middle East.

According to the company, adding olive oil to coffee makes it "smooth, velvety, sweet and delicate. The oil gives the cup of coffee an extraordinary quality of taste and texture."

The types of coffee in the innovative series are: latte coffee, frozen frothy espresso and cold brew coffee with golden foam.

According to the company's announcement, the coffee shops in Italy will have the option of adding the teaspoon of olive oil according to the customers' choice in two ways - pour the drink into a glass along with the oil or add golden foam containing the teaspoon of oil on top of the drink.

Howard Schultz, the network's interim director, said about the new series that it was inspired by his travels to Italy.

"On my first trip to Milan, Italy in 1983, I was carried away by the sense of community that I felt in the city's espresso bars, I was excited by the connection and passion of the Italians for their coffee."

According to him, it was this trip that gave him the inspiration to bring the tradition of hand-made espresso to Starbucks and America.

"Oliato represents the next revolution in the world of coffee," he said.

Amy Dilger, the chain's chief beverage developer, said of the new coffee that "infusing Starbucks coffee with olive oil yielded a velvety, smooth and rich texture to our coffee. The buttery and round flavors that the olive oil gave the drink blend perfectly with the soft and chocolaty characteristics of the coffee."
