The medical and nursing staff at the Martyr Hamza Nofal National Hospital in Lattakia made great efforts and speed in responding to the earthquake disaster, receiving the injured and conducting emergency and surgical operations, despite the limited capabilities imposed by the conditions of the unjust siege on Syria.

The director of the hospital, Dr. Siham Makhoul, explained in a statement to SANA reporter that she went to the hospital at the moment of the earthquake, and due to the magnitude of the disaster and its remnants, non-alternative cadres were summoned and distributed according to their specialties and the need in departments and people, and the injuries, most of which were traumatic and orthopedic, began to be received due to the collapse of buildings.

Makhoul indicated that operations were limited in the first three days to injuries resulting from the earthquake, and cold operations were stopped, noting that the hospital was in a state of restoration for some old departments, including the radiology department, but the matter was quickly remedied thanks to the willingness and readiness of the engineering department.

She added: Western sanctions imposed on Syria prevented modernizing devices and increasing their number, and this shortage makes the focus on existing devices great, which causes their consumption and breakdown, whether they are anesthesia devices, competitors, or planning devices, in addition to stopping some other devices due to parts that cannot be imported from abroad. .

The resident doctor, Ahmed Ali, specialized in surgery, who was on duty at the time of the earthquake, said: The speed of dealing with some injuries and sorting them according to their severity played a major role in saving lives, as the doctors made great efforts, praying day and night, starting from providing first aid to performing the necessary operations, Adding: He stayed in the external ambulance department until ten in the morning, to move with a medical team to support the staff of the Jableh National Hospital, to which the bulk of the injuries arrived, to return after that and complete work in the National Hospital in Lattakia.

The resident doctor, Hanan Raheb, specializing in neurosurgery, explained that the cases were dealt with in an emergency manner.

In her turn, Wafaa Saqr, the shift nurse during the earthquake, explained that the injuries were received and dealt with quickly through the capable nursing staff, which included fifty nurses on duty, who provided the required care to the injured.

Doctor Nawar Ali, a general surgery resident, pointed out that doctors rely in many cases on the special efforts of the human cadre and his experience in diagnosis to overcome the lack of equipment, including x-rays and laboratories, indicating that he was affected by the case of a child from the Al-Gharraf neighborhood who was the only survivor among his family and had a threatening eye injury. He lost his sight in addition to crushing injuries.
