The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, reacted after a jury in New York reached a verdict and found Genaro García Luna —former secretary of Public Security of the country— guilty of the five charges against him, which include four accusations of drug trafficking and one for lying in his statements to the immigration authorities.
The president asked former president Felipe Calderón —who was García Luna's boss— to offer an explanation to the Mexican people.
In a statement released Tuesday, Calderón said the guilty verdict against his former collaborator is being used "politically to attack me, especially by those who questioned my government's decision to act against crime."
