In this first year of the war, the map of Ukraine has seen a large number of Russian offensives and Ukrainian counter-offensives in different parts of the country.

The front lines appear to have broadly stabilized in recent months, but there are still small advances and retreats, and Russia is now engaged in an offensive in the east, pressing on Bakhmut and other cities.

Over the course of the conflict there have been at least four major fronts, or Russian attack directions.

These fronts are in the east, around the separatist territories in Donetsk and Luhansk that rose up in 2014;

in the south, in the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions, with forces from the Crimean peninsula, annexed in 2014;

in the northeast, around the city of Járkiv, the second in importance;

and, finally, in the north, around the capital, Kyiv.
