(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 24 - As many as 11.7 million Italians have never enrolled in upper secondary school, almost 4 million have stopped in their education without obtaining a secondary school diploma.

They are more men (62%) than women (38%).

In the face of almost 11 million citizens who, having acquired their diploma, have not continued their studies, there are 5 million graduates who have enrolled in university courses without completing them, with a very significant waste of time and resources.

It is one of the topics contained in the Plus 2022 Report which will be presented on 7 March in the Institute's Auditorium and which contains the results of a survey conducted on a sample of 45,000 individuals aged 18 to 74.

"Even today, 41% of the population between 18 and 74 years of age has at most a middle school diploma (17.7 million people) - write the INAPP researchers - graduates are the majority: 42%, equal to 17.9 million people The portion of the population with the highest education is made up of 6.1 million college graduates (14%) and 1.3 million people with masters and PhDs (3%) and women continue to have higher levels of education ".

"These are figures that give a fairly clear picture of our education and professional training system - explained Prof. Sebastiano Fadda, president of the Inapp - which must be improved to guarantee a better adherence of the training courses to the skills needs emerging from the evolution of society and also to guarantee an adequate system of guidance and support capable of breaking the frequent dependence of training courses on the parents' cultural and income background.Orientation, investments in school, support for the most vulnerable are activities to be supported to ensure new generations are integrated and up to date, both as citizens and as workers".

The survey also shows that the over 50s employed are 3 times the under 30s. Access to the world of work for young people still appears too cumbersome - between intermittent and precarious jobs - and largely informal, contributing to slow transitions towards stable employment.

Under the age of thirty, only 1 young person out of 5 has had a job, but it must be said that 50% of the interviewees are still engaged in their studies.

For every 100 people with a higher education qualification, 77 have a diploma (1/3 have a technical diploma and another 1/3 a high school) and 23 have a degree (and of these 4 also have a master's or PhD).

50% of high school graduates have a bachelor's degree.
