Inflation puts a strain on German households: every second person has to do without vacation

This is the result of a survey by the opinion research institute

, which interviewed 7,000 people between January and February 2023.

Accordingly, 92.8 percent of those surveyed stated that they were worried about the rise in inflation.

In January, the inflation rate was 8.7 percent.

Inflation: Germans have to do without a lot

In addition, the vast majority of respondents (70 percent) said they felt they could afford less now than they did six months ago.

Accordingly, savings are also made.

According to the survey, German households can no longer afford the following products:

  • Vacation (53.5 percent)

  • Electronic devices (61.8 percent)

  • Clothing and shoes (59.3 percent)

  • Products in the field of mobility (54.9 percent)

  • Household products such as furniture, fixtures (62 percent)

In the food sector alone, the majority of respondents stated that they can continue to afford these products.

But here, too, 44 ​​percent were of the opinion that they no longer had enough money for groceries.

Energy costs are in second and third place: 74 percent notice the inflation in electricity and gas, 72 percent at the filling station.

By and large, this corresponds to reality: energy prices rose by 23.1 percent in January 2023, and food prices by 20.2 percent.

However, the most recent report by the Federal Statistical Office also highlights visits to the vet: in January 2023, going to the vet cost 37.5 percent more than a year ago.

In order to make ends meet, most respondents (60 percent) said they recently bought other products or brands because they were cheaper.

Here, too, this applies in particular to groceries: Of the 60 percent, 84 percent stated that they now buy cheaper brands.

In second place are drugstore and cosmetic products, with 44 percent saying they have switched brands.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the prices for drugstore items have also increased in particular: Toilet paper has become 40 percent more expensive compared to 2020, items such as deodorant, toothpaste and shower gel have become more than 20 percent more expensive.

Inflation: Less money for travel and leisure

Many of the participants surveyed do not want to go on vacation in 2023 due to inflation.

survey of 1,000 people, 45 percent said they would have to forego vacations, and 38 percent said they still plan to travel.

17 percent stated that they generally do not plan any vacations.

However, the majority (43 percent) said that they plan to vacation in Germany rather than abroad.

A total of 75 percent of those surveyed were of the opinion that they spend less money on leisure time in everyday life.
