Dachau – Helmut Erhorn is dead. The master electrician and longtime city councilor died earlier this week at the age of 80.

"His passion was TSV 1865, his life's work was his electronics business," says Markus Erhorn, Helmut Erhorn's great-nephew.

Helmut Erhorn was an original, never used many words, but was always "very direct and straightforward, that's why we all liked him so much".

Markus Erhorn says that his great-uncle was always a good advisor to him.

"He also said to your face: What nonsense you did there!"

Master electrician, TSV member and CSU city councillor: Helmut Erhorn died at the age of 80

For the man from Dachau there were two great passions in his life:

TSV 1865 Dachau

and his job.

Helmut Erhorn had been a member of TSV 1865 since 1970, initially in the football department and until the end he was a member of the advisory board.

He ran his electronics business to the end.

"He was a craftsman through and through," says Markus Erhorn.

Craftsman through and through

The great-nephew remembers an experience “when we came home at 12:30 a.m. and Helmut was informed that something was wrong with a water pump for which he was responsible.

We said he could check the next morning, but he went there that night.”

In general, Helmut Erhorn helped as an electrician at all times: Christine Unzeitig, who accompanied Helmut Erhorn on his way both in the Dachau CSU and in the city council, reports that he took over the electrical work at all events, markets, at the beetroot weeks or old town festivals, also for the disabled and friends association.

Until the very end, Unzeitig worked with him in the Mittelstandsunion.

The death of her longtime companion made her very sad.

Dedicated his life to politics in Dachau

For 24 years, Helmut Erhorn dedicated his life to politics in the city of Dachau: from 1984 to 2002 and from 2008 to 2014 he sat on the city council for the CSU.

"And he was always proud that he wasn't voted out," reports Markus Erhorn.

Helmut Erhorn voluntarily chose the six-year break, and in 2014 he decided not to compete again.

Florian Schiller, parliamentary group leader of the CSU Dachau, sat next to Erhorn for a few years.

"He took me under his wing during my first time on the city council," reports Schiller.

"Grumpy, but with a big heart," is how he describes the deceased.

As a "very down-to-earth person" Erhorn did the group good and did not lose sight of the essentials in discussions.

Just last week, Helmut Erhorn was still at the CSU regulars' table.

He insisted on shaking hands with Florian Schiller in farewell.

"It was a special farewell," says Schiller.

The death of Helmut Erhorn shook him.

Big heart

The big heart was also shown in Helmut Erhorn's commitment to building a school in Nepal, reports Markus Erhorn.

His great-uncle flew there a few times and supported the project financially.

"He showed us pictures of the children, received letters and watched them grow up."

Helmut Erhorn's own family is widely scattered: Markus Erhorn reports that his sister emigrated to the USA.

Daughter and son also went abroad.

Helmut Erhorn worked until the last day, "he was actually quite healthy," says his great-nephew.

He died earlier this week - he fell asleep peacefully at home.

"We're crazy about him," says Markus Erhorn.
