The world commemorates this Friday the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a war that has put Europe's unity to the test and further strained relations between the United States and Russia, although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is confident that the help of his allies will allow his "invincible" country to win the war soon.

But before this symbolic date, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his intention to reinforce the nuclear capacity of his Army, also accusing Ukraine of starting the conflict, for which China requested a ceasefire on Friday and presented a plan of peace that contemplates the opening of negotiations and the end of sanctions.

Not the white flag, but the blue and yellow.

In a sign of Russia's growing isolation on the world stage, 141 of the 193 members of the United Nations General Assembly voted Thursday in favor of a resolution urging Moscow to end the war and withdraw its forces. from Ukraine.

Syria and Belarus were among the seven states that voted against the motion, while there were 32 abstentions.

Russian nuclear threats and the Chinese peace plan

This isolation has made Russia increasingly dependent on China, which has distanced itself from the West's response to the conflict, although this Friday it unveiled a 12-point peace plan, in addition to calling for a ceasefire and an end to the sanctions.

A few days ago, the United States warned that the Chinese authorities would be considering offering lethal military aid to Russia.

“Conflict and war benefit no one.

All parties should maintain rationality and restraint, avoid fanning the fire and aggravate tensions, and prevent the crisis from further deteriorating or even spiraling out of control," the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg accused China of not having "much credibility" in the war.

Although Beijing claims to be neutral in the conflict, it also maintains what it calls an "unlimited" relationship with Moscow.

This same week he responded to the accusations of the Biden government about his alleged aid to Russian forces, urging him to stay out of his relationship with Russia.

Russia has marked the first anniversary of the start of the war with a series of public appearances by Putin, in which he vowed to strengthen the country's nuclear capability after suspending his role in the New START treaty.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday that the only way to ensure lasting peace is to push back the borders of hostile states as far as possible, even if that means the limits of NATO member Poland.

A war of resistance and few Russian advances

The conflict remains intense, with fierce fighting in the eastern Donbas region following the start of a renewed Russian offensive earlier this month.

Ukrainian authorities have warned that missile attacks could increase on the day that marks the first anniversary, a day when schools have been closed and thousands of people across the country have attended vigils and events to remember the fallen.

Russia, which at the beginning of the invasion contemplated a quick and effective victory, has not made significant advances on the battlefield throughout these months.

According to the intelligence report on Friday prepared by the British Ministry of Defense, the objective of the Russian forces is now to deteriorate the Ukrainian Army, instead of seeking to conquer specific territories.

"Russian leaders are likely running a long-term operation in which they are confident that Russia's advantage in population and resources will eventually exhaust Ukraine," the ministry said.

Fears of an escalation of the conflict have waxed and waned over the past 12 months, although concern grew last week that Russia could attack a neighboring country.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) claimed in an analysis report on Thursday, citing Ukrainian intelligence services, that Russian forces are preparing a "false flag" operation - an attack camouflaged to make it look like it was carried out by the opposing side - in the northern region of Chernihiv, on the border with Belarus and Russia, and in the occupied region of Transnistria, in Moldova.

Ukrainian authorities believe, according to the report, that unmarked Russian vehicles and soldiers in uniforms similar to those worn by Ukrainian forces have already been seen near the border with Belarus.

“The purpose of these false flag operations would be to accuse Ukrainian forces of violating the territorial integrity of an unspecified country, most likely referring to Belarus,” the ISW said.
