Update from February 24, 10:15 a.m .:

Ukraine announced a counter-offensive on the anniversary of the Russian war of aggression.

"We will strike harder and from greater distances, in the air, on the ground, at sea and in cyberspace," Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov wrote on Facebook.

"There will be a counteroffensive.

We are working hard to prepare them.”

A year ago, it was still difficult for Ukraine to get the weapons it needed to ward off the Russian attack, Resnikov explained.

In the meantime, however, the "civilized countries" have recognized that the Ukrainian army is "Europe's protective shield in the east".

"We are entering a new period," wrote Reznikov.

The task is the victory over Russia: It is about the "liberation of our entire territory up to the borders of 1991 and the elimination of the threat from Russia," said the minister.

Ukraine War: Battles for Bakhmut continue

First report from February 24:

Berkhovka/Bachmut – On the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Wagner group presented a partial success in the region around Bachmut.

In the Donetsk Oblast, where the mercenaries have not made any progress for months despite their own statements to the contrary, a village is said to have been taken.

The town of Berkhovka is "completely under control," said the press service of Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin on Friday.

The village is northwest of Bakhmut.

Battle for Bakhmut: Russia is advancing - "heavy fighting" for Ukraine city

Fierce fighting has been raging around the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut and its border regions for several weeks.

In January, the Russian army, supported by the notorious Wagner mercenary group, intensified its offensive on Bakhmut.

It is the longest and bloodiest battle of the war.

Most recently, Russian soldiers have been able to celebrate minor successes in the region.

However, Bakhmut has not yet fallen into Russian hands.

According to the British secret service, the Ukrainian defenders of the increasingly encircled city are managing to keep supply routes open - and thus prevent the city from being taken any further.

On Wednesday (February 22), Kiev also reported that several Russian attacks in the region had been repelled.

However, there are still “heavy fights” around Bachmut.
