“The Voice”, new releases under control

On the occasion of the launch of the new season of TF1 telecrochet on Saturday evening, producer Matthieu Grelier reveals the process of evolution of a format that knows how to last.

With twelve regular editions and an anniversary special,

“The Voice”

is the musical telecrochet to have offered the most seasons on French television, excluding Eurovision and tied with “Nouvelle Star”.

Unlike the M6 program, the TF1 program has been perfectly regular since 2012, with no broadcast breaks or channel changes.

This longevity is due as much to the singularity of its format as to the talent of the various protagonists.

Revealed singers (Kendji Girac, Slimane, Anne Sila) to coaches (Florent Pagny, Mika, Zazie) via Nikos Aliagas, model of ease in animation.

To last in television, you have to know how to evolve, surprise and reinvent yourself.

If a sports competition can continue with almost immutable rules, a singing competition cannot be satisfied with tirelessly reusing the same recipe, at the risk of disgusting the public.

"We have never rested on our laurels"

, assures

Matthieu Grelier

, anxious to preserve the enthusiasm of viewers for twelve years.

For this season 12 of “The Voice”, the teams of ITV Studios France have made several changes.

"We wanted a strong novelty at each stage of the program"

, underlines the producer.

For the first time, a pair of coaches, the rapper brothers Bigflo and Oli, share a double chair alongside the returning Zazie, Amel Bent and Vianney.

During the blind auditions, the “super block” comes to spice up the debates between the coaches.

The latter can use it at any time to eliminate one of their competitors in the race for the best talents.

Then during the “battles” phase, the competing artists will oppose each other in the presence, in the middle of the stage, of their mentor.

Finally, the “super cross battles”, where the spectators in the room sanction each duel with their votes, will be marked by the intervention of Mika, whose single vote will count for 10% of the votes.

"It's nice to see that our investment and our proposals are recognized internationally"

Matthieu Grelier, producer of “The Voice”

The format created in 2010 by Dutchman John de Mol has been adapted in dozens of countries around the world.

"There are fundamentals to respect

," says Matthieu Grelier.

In recent years, we have had the desire to shape the program with French specificities.

Each country develops “The Voice” at its own pace and in its own way.

Around the ineradicable values of the search for excellence and benevolence, these new ideas must be submitted for

validation by the depositary of the format, which ensures that it is not distorted.

Until 2016, it was the Talpa and John de Mol teams who listened to Shine France's arguments.

“Most of the time our ideas were accepted, but sometimes

, says Matthieu Grelier.

Since 2017, “The Voice” has been owned by ITV Studios.

“This has eased our room for manoeuvre, even if we always respect a process of discussion and validation with the parent company, in the Netherlands.

The “made in France” telecrochet has become a veritable laboratory for new ideas and a source of inspiration for other countries.

"In agreement with TF1, we have the version that has experienced the most things"

, welcomes the director of programs and development of ITV Studios France.

“We have proven ourselves by maintaining the format at a very high level.

It's nice to see that our investment and our proposals are recognized internationally.

Discussion workshops are organized each year between producers from different countries to discuss and bring out new ideas.

It is up to the talents and the coaches to give meaning to each development, and then to the viewers to appreciate them.

"The reactions of each other allow us to readjust or abandon a new idea"

, concludes Matthieu Grelier.

The season with 50,000 votes

Imagine the Parc des Princes full to bursting, 50,000 people gathered to follow the exploits (or setbacks) of Paris Saint-Germain.

This is more or less the equivalent of the number of artists who tried to integrate season 12 of “The Voice”.

A record.

After skimming, they will only be a hundred to perform on stage against Zazie, Amel Bent, Vianney and the Toulouse brothers Bigflo and Oli.

Six months of work were needed to compose the cast.

"There is something special in the diversity of profiles and the overall quality

," says Matthieu Grelier.

We kept fewer artists than usual to focus on the best.

They all have a lot of talent, a well-defined artistic universe and something to say.

90% of them are amateurs, people who have a job in addition to their passion.

The musical eclecticism of our talents is found in the team of coaches.

We have a range of registers, generations and styles that has never been so wide.
