Representatives of the Israeli government and the PLO are meeting in Jordan on Sunday following the recent escalation of violence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

A representative of the Jordanian government told the AFP news agency on Saturday that the aim of the "security policy" meeting was to build "trust" between the two sides.

The meeting in Aqaba, to which representatives of the USA and Egypt have also been invited, is intended to help calm the situation.

At least 11 people, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed in an Israeli army operation in Nablus on Wednesday, according to Palestinian sources.

80 people were injured.

It was the most devastating Israeli army operation in the West Bank since 2005. Several rockets were fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip on Thursday.

The Israeli army then launched airstrikes on targets in the Palestinian territories.

Sunday's talks are part of Jordan's efforts to put an end to "[Israel's] unilateral actions and deteriorating security situation that could fuel further violence," the Jordanian official said.

The Israeli army has been stepping up operations in the north of the West Bank for almost a year.

She is looking for militant Palestinians.

More than 60 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the year, including assassins and fighters, but also civilians and children.

On the Israeli side, nine civilians, a police officer and a Ukrainian died in the conflict.

The international community called for de-escalation days ago.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in New York on Wednesday that "the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory is at its most dangerous point in years".

The first priority must be “to prevent further escalation, reduce tensions and restore calm”.
