Rusherking's secrets to success and his advice on avoiding the paparazzi

2023-02-25T18:38:59.434Z

A month after his first Movistar Arena, the urban music star explains why he sings with artists of other styles, and what it was like to deal with the press when he got married to China Suárez.

Five years ago, at 17, Thomas Nicolás Tobar took his savings, asked his parents for help and

came from Santiago del Estero to Buenos Aires

to be a trap singer.

He already had the stage name for him,

"Rusherking"

, and every desire to pursue music and succeed.

Today he is one of the biggest names in the local urban music scene.

He had many hits and collaborated with figures

such as María Becerra, Duki, Oriana, Luck Ra, Lit Killah, Tiago PZK and FMK.

And just a week ago he was at the Viña del Mar Festival as a guest of Emilia Mernes.

In addition to filling the Gran Rex and Luna Park, he practiced the

crossover

with very good results ,

join artists of other styles such as Alejandro Lerner, Dread Mar-I, Iván Noble and La K'onga.

A perfect formula for massive success

His name also entered the territory of the paparazzi and gossip shows by dating

La China Suárez

.

Unusually, he spent almost a year with María Becerra before and did not generate the same media commotion.

Now, when facing an important recital at the Movistar Arena stadium, on

Friday, March 24

, he plans to give a big kick to his activity of the year, which started with summer tours and the single

Quiero creer

(with Luck Ra and La T y la M), and will continue with the release of an EP, then his first album and finally an international tour.

"I wanted to be where I am"

Shortly after noon on a Monday, after a hectic tour that started at the Salamanca Festival (La Banda, Santiago del Estero) and the next day went all the way to the Piedra Laja National Festival (Los Menucos, Río Negro),

Tommy

sits on a comfortable sofa in his production company and chats while glancing sideways at the lunch that is still waiting for him.

At one point he remains pensive, when he hears the popular saying "Don't ask for a dream because it can come true", and reflects:

"When you have a dream - he says - perhaps you don't know what the process is or what can happen, but you dream it because you want it and want it. I wanted to be where I am. I wanted to be a singer and I never imagined all the things that I lived in between".

-What was your first dream, to come to Buenos Aires?

-Yeah.

My first dream was to come to Buenos Aires.

She gave herself to me, I came, I didn't have a good time and I had to sleep in a basement.

That is why I say that it is not only the dream where one imagines that everything is perfect, but that there are a thousand things that happen in between until it is fulfilled.

-Many music scenes have mythical places, like the bar where rockers went in the '60s or Antezana 247, the house where Duki, YSY A and Neo Pistea lived.

How was the house where you lived with Lit Killah and Tiago PZK?

-That was from 2021 to January 2022. It was a giant house in Nuñez, a mansion with a pool and everything, where we set up the studio and the four of us were: Tiago, FMK, Lit and me.

That's where the best songs on the scene came from, like

Besides me

,

Between us

,

Turn on the camera

,

Yo sé que tu

and the entire FMK album, Lit's and Tiago's.

There were many issues that marked history and came from there.

-How was living together?

Were they in a "permanent party state"?

-Coexistence, like everything new, at first was somewhat complicated until we got used to it, because no one had lived with friends before.

But in the end we understood each other perfectly and we got along very well.

Obviously there were parties from time to time and we had a great time.

There are a thousand anecdotes left, like my anger when someone ate my Serenito dessert.

(laughs) It was a very nice period that we all lived together, and I think that people from outside see that, that it was good.

And we were already playing a lot.

-Who else do you have a lot of complicity and friendship in the scene?

-With that little group, with the three of them, because we were trained as artists and our career was formed in that time that we lived together.

We learned a lot from each other and we trust each other a lot.

Reports and paparazzi

-Some artists, like Wos and Bizarrap, hardly give interviews, while for example L-Gante gives a lot.

How do you get along with the reports?

-Everyone has their reasons for giving or not giving interviews.

I particularly like to talk and tell what I am doing and at what point in my career I am.

I also think it helps a lot to promote, that they find out that I have a show or a new song, whatever.

It's a way of staying present, but I don't like to give too much either.

That they are the ones that I have to give since the people arrive to him.

-And was it not difficult for you to give notes in recent months, where perhaps they did not ask you about music and they only wanted to know about your private life?

-Yes, but thank God that took a break since we confirmed the relationship with my girlfriend and everything became more public.

Since everything is clearer, they don't bother us so much anymore.

The problem was when no one knew if we were together or not.

That's where the biggest kilombo was set up.

Since now they don't have to ask us, everything is perfect.

What wouldn't you do again?

-And... farting, going to a party, having your picture taken and everyone realizing what you're up to.

It's what we did!

-What would be the song that most reflects this personal stage of yours, "Fondo de pantalla", which says "I fell in love with you at first sight, yeah"?

-Yes, just like that.

I am in a very beautiful moment, enjoying her a lot and nourishing myself a lot from her and she from me, learning a lot from her.

Both very happy.

She accompanies me to the shows and I accompany her to her work.

"I like to vary, otherwise I get bored"

One of the characteristics of urban music is the union of artists in duos or trios, where sometimes they come from similar styles but in other cases they are very different.

According to Rusherking, "There is a bit of everything. When you make songs, you always think of someone who can get involved. Offers of collaborations also come from elsewhere, both from the record company and from messages on Instagram. But they come from all kinds and from all sides I look for mine, I always try to talk to the artist and coordinate with each other, I talk to other artists and we always reach an agreement.

-It seems that you like everything, because you took a trip with Lerner and La K'onga.

Do you like variety so as not to pigeonhole yourself?

-I like to vary, because otherwise I get bored.

I like to do different things all the time, because monotony and routine make me shit.

I prefer to explore different universes and I always stay that way.

In fact, I did the ballad with Lerner, a reggae with Dread Mar-I, before a song with Iván Noble and a ballad with Reik.

Now a cumbia and recently an RKT.

-The last thing was the theme with Luck Ra and T and La M. How did they connect?

-We recorded that theme a month before launching it.

It came out of nowhere!

Luck was on the coast and said that he had a song with La T y La M, that he wanted to join me.

He knows that every project he asks me I say yes, once.

On top of that, the song was a bombshell, so I went into the studio, I liked what I did and I sent it to him.

Then we went to Pinamar, where I was with my girlfriend on vacation, and we coordinated and recorded on video.

It went super well.

It was all very fast.

-Does everything come out so fast, a month between the first call for the release of the song and the video?

Or do you save topics for later?

-It depends on one and the strategy of each release.

In general, I do it quickly in the studio, to the touch, and we present it to the platforms.

Then we make the video clip.

The process is not very long;

maximum two months.

-Do you always think about songs, or do you have the album in view?

-Yeah.

In fact, this year I want to release the album, maybe in two months.

I'm thinking about the LP and not being singles all the time.

We already have almost the entire idea formed and almost all the songs, but first I'm going to release an EP with three songs, with a producer called Sech, who is terrific.

We're out with that now.

.

I don't like to spoil the collaborations, but there will be more on the album, and obviously I will release others later.

But it's also a time where I want to focus a lot on myself and my solo songs and give that a head.

Heading to the Movistar Arena

Rusherking will play on March 24 at the Movistar Arena stadium for the first time.

When reviewing 2022, he says that "everything happened."

In total he did some 50 dates throughout Argentina.

"The truth is that we ended up very tired, tired but happy," he admits, but immediately says that in 2023 he wants to do even more, including an international tour.

-What show did you see where you liked the staging and scenery?

-The Vélez de Duki were tremendous.

I saw Rosalía's when she came to Movistar, which was very simple but very well done, very programmed and scripted.

In Madrid I saw the Arjona show, which breaks it, with a great set design.

I didn't see Dillom live, but I would love to because I know he breaks it.

Whenever I go to a show I pay attention to all those things, to see what can be added to one.

-Do you imagine the Movistar recital being very different from the summer shows?

-It's going to be very different from weekend shows, which are generally festivals where you can't show one hundred percent of your entire team.

In itself, time is less, so in a show like Movistar one tends to give everything.

It's going to be tremendous;

We are proposing something very beautiful in terms of aesthetics, all the artists will come to sing the songs with me, and there are moments designed for each part of the show.

It's going to be great, really.

I know that they are one hundred percent my people, the people who follow me and support me and know all the songs and all the lyrics.

It will be a very nice experience for me.

I think it's going to be my best own show.
