The European Union announced on Saturday new sanctions against the Russian group Wagner for its "
human rights violations
" in the Central African Republic, Sudan and Mali.
Eight individuals and seven entities linked to the paramilitary group have been added to the bloc's list of asset freezes and a travel ban.

Already at the end of 2021, the Wagner group itself, which is actively fighting with the Russian army in Ukraine, had been sanctioned by the European Union in 2021 for its “
destabilizing actions
” carried out in Ukraine and in several African countries.
The decision was unanimously endorsed by EU foreign ministers.
The sanctions consisted of a visa ban for people and the freezing of assets in the EU.
