Firefighters on the Autobahn: A BMW burned out on the A8 near Irschenberg on Saturday morning.
Irschenberg
– A BMW caught fire on the A8 near Irschenberg on Saturday morning and burned out completely.
As reported by the police, three people were traveling towards Munich in the BMW with Austrian registration at around 7.20 a.m.
In the Leitzachsenke at the end of the slope after the Irschenberg junction, the car suddenly began to smoke from the engine compartment.
The 63-year-old driver was able to steer his vehicle off the road to the right, and all occupants left the car.
Shortly thereafter, the BMW was already fully engulfed in flames.
Traffic jam after extinguishing and salvage work
The Irschenberg fire brigade deployed with around 20 emergency services and several vehicles and, according to the police report, was able to quickly extinguish the fire.
Nobody got hurt.
The highway police and the highway maintenance department were also on duty.
The material damage to the BMW, which should only have scrap value, is around 20,000 euros.
A local towing company was called in to help with the recovery using a crane.
For the extinguishing and rescue work, the motorway in the direction of Munich had to be narrowed to one lane.
Together with the onset of winter, this led to major traffic disruptions - the backlog almost reached the Bad Aibling junction and is only slowly dissipating.
