More than 40 migrants perished this morning (Sunday) in the sinking of a migrant ship near the coast of Calabria in southern Italy, the Italian newspaper "La Stampa" reported.
According to the report, at least 32 bodies were found scattered on the beach near the town of Stacca di Cutro, which is about one hundred and fifty kilometers south of the city of Naples.
The rescue and rescue services, along with Coast Guard ships, arrived at the disaster area and began to remove survivors from the sea water.
Other media in Italy reported that more than one hundred and eighty immigrants from Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan were on board the vessel.
Among those who perished in the disaster is a baby a few months old.
The Italian police said that the disaster was caused by stormy weather and that the vessel broke in two due to the huge waves that hit the coastal area.
The mayor of Staca Di Cutro told the country's media: "This is a tremendous tragedy that landed off our shores. The number of dead is expected to increase by a lot."
