For the second day in a row, a delegation from UNESCO continues to inspect the damage to buildings in the education and antiquities sectors in Aleppo as a result of the earthquake.

The delegation's visit today included schools whose structural damage was damaged, shelter centers, meeting with some students and their families, and listening to their difficulties and needs.

The Director General of Antiquities and Museums, Muhammad Nazir Awad, said in a statement to SANA reporter: “The arrival of the delegation of experts from the regional office of UNESCO in Beirut comes within the framework of cooperation between the Ministry of Culture - the Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums - and the regional office of the organization in Beirut, to see the extent of the damage that affected the monuments. Archaeological sites in the city of Aleppo as a result of the earthquake.

He pointed out that the tour of the damages includes a delegation of experts from the regional office of UNESCO, and a team from the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums and the Syrian Trust for Development, where the National Museum in Aleppo was visited and the structural damages that affected the building, the Aleppo Citadel and the damages that affected them were visited in terms of cracks, displacements and collapses in a number of Among the features of the inner castle, the most important of which are the mill, the Ottoman barracks, and the Ayyubid minaret, in addition to a tour of the old city and a visit to the old historical markets, the old caravanserais and neighborhoods, and the gates of Aleppo, which were also damaged.

Dr. Nidal Hasan, Secretary of the National Committee for UNESCO at the Ministry of Education, explained that the visit comes within the framework of coordination and cooperation between the Ministry of Education and UNESCO, and aims to assess the extent of damage to schools, pointing out the Ministry of Education's keenness to secure all educational supplies in Aleppo, as they are a basic need. societal.

The delegation currently visiting Aleppo from UNESCO includes Dr. Michel Shalhoub (structure expert in restoration), Elena Constantino (an expert in the cultural program from the UNESCO office in Beirut), and from Syria, the Director General of Antiquities and Museums, Muhammad Nazeer Awad, and the Director of Antiquities of Aleppo, Dr. Sakhr Al-Ulabi. And a number of experts, including engineers and archaeologists, from the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums, as well as representatives of experts from ICOMS Syria, the Syrian Trust for Development, the Association of Antiquities and the National Committee for Education, Culture and Science.

It is scheduled that the task of the UNESCO delegation is to work on estimating the extent of the damage that befell the Old City, in preparation for setting priorities for urgent intervention for the affected places, and studying financing some projects that need urgent emergency intervention. The visit will continue during the coming days to determine the damages in the neighborhoods of the Old City of Aleppo. Especially its western wall, the Al-Aqiba neighborhood, which was severely damaged, as well as the Al-Jadida neighborhood and the Al-Jalloum area.
