Shipyards: the new Chinese competition on cruise ships

After twenty years of learning, China is ready to challenge the world leadership of European shipyards.

This niche market is considered the most complex in commercial shipbuilding.

A threat in the long term for the Chantiers de l'Atlantique, world number one, and its dolphins: the Italian Fincantieri and the German Meyer Werft.

These three Europeans represent 90% of the market.

China has patiently moved upmarket with increasingly sophisticated boats.

Between 2014 and 2022, the CMHI Haimen shipyard has built 10 small ships for 350 to 400 passengers.

At the beginning of 2023, the public group China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), world leader in shipbuilding since its merger with CSIC in 2020, launched a first large liner with a capacity of 6,700 passengers.
