Employees in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia have begun a 24-hour strike, causing the cancellation of more than 325 flights at the state's two main airports.
"The strike included many areas of public life such as airports, hospitals, garbage collection centers and light rail transport," local media quoted Verdi as saying in a statement.
The statement pointed out that protests are scheduled during the day in addition to the strike.
A statement issued by the airports of Cologne Bonn and Dusseldorf stated that more than 325 flights were canceled at the two airports due to the strike.
Employers had offered a 5 percent increase in wages for employees in federal and local governments, along with a one-time extra payment of 2,500 euros, but unions rejected the offer as insufficient.
The unions are demanding a 10.5 percent wage increase or an additional increase of at least 500 euros per month.
