Carlos Belloso: the sensitive murderer of the Palermo Division, who suffers from heartbreak

2023-02-27T13:45:51.657Z

In the hit Netflix series he is Dogo, a drug criminal in mourning for a separation. He music, painting and a doll with which he talks.

At this time Carlos Belloso is -he will tell us- in a state of surprise.

The mega-success of División Palermo and the popularity of Dogo, his character,

were not expected .

The series -created, written, starring and directed by Santiago Korovsky- has a notable cast, and he plays a ruthless but sensitive killer suffering from heartbreak.

It is not the first time that Belloso appeals to the game of apparently irreconcilable differences, nor does it play an enduring role in the memory of fiction.

Recognized for being multifaceted -in television, theater or cinema-, he always

assumes roles where the gestural and the physical have their own weight

, beyond words.

The interesting thing is to discover how everything he builds as an actor has a reason and that why is in plain sight.

He barely opens the door of his house in Villa Crespo, the first thing that stands out is his shirt.

He carries on his chest his idol, Lon Chaney, the great silent film actor, in his insane role in the movie London

After Midnight

, and nicknamed "The Man with a Thousand Faces."

Same as him.

In "División Palermo", the Netflix series, Carlos Belloso composes a murderer who suffers for love.

unexpected phenomenon

-How do you live the phenomenon of División Palermo?

-And strange, because I knew it would work well, but something unexpected really happened, because it was seen a lot not only here, but in many Spanish-speaking parts.

But since

I don't consult the networks

and it seems that a whole movement was generated there, I didn't even realize it, I only found out when my colleagues, my friends and my family began to call me who had obviously seen it.

But even we, the members of the series, are amazed that it hits so much.

I don't know if it's the circumstance, the situation... Things that happen sometimes are rare and

fiction always represents something of reality

.

Carlos Belloso, as Dogo, the narco assassin from "División Palermo".

-The series is a parody, but it talks about inclusion and laughs at things that would normally be embarrassing, for example, when Sofia's (Pilar Gamboa) wheelchair is stolen.

-In general, the issue of inclusion is not discussed openly, out of guilt and at the same time, so as not to screw up.

You have to have respect for all minorities and talk to find out what they need or how they want to be treated

.

There are blind people who tell you: "Call me blind, because the 'blind' distances me."

And one would think that if he calls him blind he enters into a code that he is not.

This crazy, black comedy establishes that dialogue that we need.

In this sense, fiction fulfills its mission.

-It just comes in an election year where everything is politicized, is it also a call to attention to the authorities and those responsible?

Multi-faceted.

Carlos Belloso acts, directs, paints and makes music.

In "Palermo Division", he breaks it.

-It puts a lot of things into question, not only the police or the Guàrdia Urbana in particular.

Of course,

in a political moment, everything is taken politically

.

And this series does not have many euphemisms, it says what it has to say and gives voice to those places that have no voice and it seems to me that from humor that reflection will always be very effective.

The murderer who makes himself loved

-Despite the fact that you are ductile, your villainous roles always stand out and here you play a drug murderer, but Dogo also has that side of comedy that makes him lovable.

-I do everything.

Comedy, drama, tragedy... because I like to act.

But I don't want to lose the

timing

of the comedy and here it is, because although it is a very tough role, it has humor not of gestures, but of circumstances that my character goes through and that makes him very funny, despite himself.

You are going through a marital tragedy

.

And although it is not that one empathizes with the murderer, he does with that story with his wife.

-Why do you think you are attractive for this type of role that always ends up being so talked about?

I think you have to distinguish.

I am not going to look for or do not look for some immediate success in something.

And obviously throughout my career I've been bad, good, regular, poetic... I've had several hits in comedy, like El Vasquito de

Campeones

or Quique in

Sos mi vida

...

I have filmed both movies with Lucrecia Martel (

La niña santa

) or Sebastián Borensztein (

La odisea de los giles

) as well as action movies that I love or comedy series like

División Palermo,

which I also like.

I try to obey a good director directing me and a project that has something to say.

And professionally I try to have a broad spectrum and

be an actor who can make people laugh as well as cry

.

Here, there and everywhere

-An all terrain.

-Yeah.

And at the same time I like experimentation.

In March I premiere

Massacre on the Red Carpet

, a work by Leo Damario, at Microteatro, which is a place I like, with my wife Ile (lleana) Jaciw, María Eugenia Rigon and Gonzalo Barbadillo.

The costumes are by Pablo Ramírez and I'm also very happy about that.

In June, Cervantes invited me to do

Salvajada

, Mauricio Kartun's adaptation of a story by Horacio Quiroga, directed by Luis Rivera López.

I am giving shape to a one-man show that I wrote and it is called

El aparato

, in which Hernán “Curly” Jiménez, an incredible musician and an impeccable director, directs me.

In streaming I have

Pure Belloso

.

And several things have to be released, for example, the second season of

Iosi, the repentant spy

.

-Your mention of the designer Pablo Ramírez reveals that you are also a fashionista.

-Yeah!

I am a fan of Pablo and for me he is one of the best.

-You surprise me, because you are more of an urban look, like neglected...

-Yes... or relaxed, right?

I want to be comfortable and, at the same time, when it's time to dress well, I like to do it.

TV made him popular

-You started when you were very young, but people discover you on TV.

Before El Vasquito you were the cross-eyed barrabrava of RRDT, your first important role.

-Yes, but I did theater long before.

What's more, I belong to the Buenos Aires underworld.

In the '80s, after the Malvinas war, I devoted myself purely and exclusively to acting, and

I landed at the Parakultural, which was somewhat my great school of acting

, although I had already been studying at the Municipal School of Dramatic Art.

Having been to the Parakultural was also an explosion, not popular but of creativity rarely seen.

And having been part of his staff was something magical that still fills me today, that's why I always experiment in my studio (on the first floor of his PH), where I rehearse the works and try with light, with projection, with different things. .

Carlos Belloso, in "Palermo Division".

Dogo, the murderer that he composes, is one of the attractions of the Netflix series.

-You said in passing that it all started after the Malvinas war because you were in the 11th Artillery Group in Río Gallegos.

-Yeah.

In the South Atlantic Theater of Operations

.

I entered with 18 years and I was a year and three months.

In other words, the Parakultural in that sense was like an explosion for me as well.

It came from the dictatorship and the possibilities of trying new things in a creative place was like waking up, it was also the Alfonsinista spring.

-Before being an actor you dabbled as a musician, with a band, Los Barbacandados.

-Yes, even today I make music, my son (Bruno, 28 years old) is a musician so we spend some things together.

But it is one more form of expression, as an actor I am a good musician, now as a musician I am a very good actor.

The performance brings everything together, even

the painting with which I won an award

(the National Painting Award with a work from the Uruguayan document by Carlos Gardel).

Now in order not to lose my hand I make illustrations and on my Instagram (@bellosoactor) you can see many of my drawings.

-Do you play any instrument?

-I compose and sing on the guitar, I play something on the keyboard, percussion and instruments work for me too.

In the musical

Aladdin

I had to sing, but I play more than I sing virtuously, just like on the guitar.

It helps me to accompany me and to compose certain things that later an arranger will manage to fix.

(laughs)

Carlos Belloso.

In addition to "División Palermo", the actor has projects of all kinds.

In

Sos mi vida

, he serenaded Natalia Oreiro singing to her with Boca's guitar!

Or did covers.

And sometimes she composed for the program, there Natalia encouraged me and she told me: "I composed, she has some choirs and here a chorus...".

And he composed with her.

Natalia is barbaric, she is an incredible musician and singer, and sometimes we play songs.

The talking doll

-In your workshop you introduced us to Felipe, how did your story as a ventriloquist come about?

-I played the life of

Lon Chaney

, an actor I greatly admire and in the movie

The Unholy Three

he was a ventriloquist.

When I made

Mundomudo

(in 2009) I had a doll made that turned out to be Felipe and although I wasn't driving it when the work finished I kept the doll.

And over time I began to really have a dialogue with him.

-Where did you learn?

-I am a ventriloquist, I interact with a doll, I do not learn anything, I am and Felipe is.

One day, Felipe spoke to me

.

And that's the whole explanation.

We were watching

Bendita

-I send a kiss to Beto Casella- and when I'm going to change the program he turns around and says: “Don't change it”.

And from there we talk.

The doll has its own entity.

I don't make him talk.

He speaks.

But it is another expressive resource as well.

I browse all the expressive resources, I make music with a spoon, or I can do theater with an ice cream maker, Felipe talks to me... I need to express what I need to express, that is the path for me.

And I am an actor because there is a title that brings everything together, but in reality, painting, music, writing, poetry, directing are also in me...

Evil duo.

-On April 5 you turn 60, what do you want for this stage of your life?

-I don't celebrate my birthdays, because I don't like birthdays at all, because every time it's one year less to live and

I don't like to get closer to death

.

This life is wonderful and although I have a notion of finiteness, I have no notion of my age.

I don't say to myself: "Oh, in the 60s I was going to arrive for such a thing...".

I go and move forward and keep moving forward.

And I'm very lucky.

First, a beautiful family: my two children, Bruno and Romina, who is 26 years old and an actress;

and my wife Ile, who helps me with her and we have a great time working together and plotting things.

My two cats, Maleficent and Morticia;

my Gaucho dog;

and my work that does not stop.

So,

I can't ask for anything more from life

.

I am happy with everything that touched me.
