Hundreds of schoolgirls in the holy city of Qom in Iran have been poisoned in recent months, and the deputy health minister said it was deliberate in order to prevent girls from getting an education.
Some of them even required hospital treatment, and the authorities have not yet arrested suspects.
"After the poisoning of several female students in schools in Qom, it was discovered that there are certain people who want all schools, especially girls' schools, to be closed," said Deputy Minister of Health, Younes Panhai.
He did not elaborate beyond that.
On February 14, parents of the poisoned schoolgirls gathered outside the governor's building to "demand explanations" from the authorities.
The next day, government spokesman Ali Bahaduri Jahrumi said that the intelligence and education ministries are working to uncover the cause of the poisonings and last week the attorney general ordered investigations into the matter.
The poisonings occurred while Iran experienced a wave of protests following the death of the young Kurdish girl Mehsa Amini in the custody of the Mosar regime on September 16.
She was arrested for violating the Islamic Republic's strict dress code.
