The Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergey Naryshkin, confirmed that Russia is defending its right to a free and dignified future in Donbass and Kherson and Zaporozhye provinces.
Sputnik quoted Naryshkin as saying on the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the liberation of the Donbass region from the Nazi invaders: Today our soldiers, officers and volunteers with weapons defend our homeland on the land of Donbass, where our fathers and grandfathers fought 80 years ago for every meter of our land, the Russian land of Donbass.
Naryshkin added: In the Donbass, and in the Kherson and Zaporozhye provinces, the modern history of Russia is being written today, and the right of our country and our people to a free and dignified future, pointing out that the Donbass region gave Russia many prominent figures in science and culture.
Naryshkin noted that the historical choice of the inhabitants of Donbass lies in the common destiny of the peoples of Russia, and its centuries-old history, and therefore they were not broken by the difficult years that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union.
