The downtown redevelopment in Freising is progressing.

However, this also leads to new construction sites - and to a premiere.

Freising

– The new construction sites as part of the Freising city center redevelopment lead to major changes for motorized traffic.

And they ensure a historical novelty.

There have never been any new traffic regulations

For the first time ever, delivery times are being restricted in the city center - at least in a small section: between Marienplatz and Amtsgerichtsgasse, goods can only be delivered from April up to and including November from 6 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Mayor Eva Bönig, who invited to the press conference on Monday, called this a "foretaste of the future pedestrian zone".

Access to Oberen Hauptstraße will also be significantly restricted during this period.

The background to the regulation are the two new large construction sites in the city center: Bahnhofstrasse and Obere Hauptstrasse between Schiedereck and Marienplatz.

In Bahnhofstrasse, the heating network is currently being extended from Gred to Brunnhausgasse.

From April to the end of the year, the surfaces there are to be redesigned - just like in the second section mentioned and around the Asam.

"Stomach ache" for Active City

“Traffic will change drastically in six weeks,” was the announcement made by Michael Schulze, coordinator of the city center redevelopment.

All shops remain accessible, but while pedestrians can still pass and cyclists should dismount, the construction site passages will remain closed to motorized traffic from April to the end of November.

For logistical reasons, due to the construction site between Schiedereck and Marienplatz, the subsequent section between Marienplatz and Amtsgerichtsgasse will also be restricted for delivery traffic.

While Max Kirchmaier (Aktive City) is preparing the “stomach ache” regulation, Mayor Bönig saw a welcome attempt here.

After all, a pedestrian zone is to be created here after the redesign between Schiedereck and Amtsgerichtsgasse.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

At the same time, access to Oberen Hauptstrasse will be restricted during this period.

As a reminder: Since the summer of 2022, motorized traffic is no longer allowed to turn from the Karlwirt crossing onto Obere Hauptstraße.

Access is normally at the other end via Bahnhofstrasse, which, as desired, has also significantly reduced motorized traffic, as Kirchmaier conceded.

Certain vehicles require a special permit

However, because Bahnhofstrasse will also no longer be passable from April, the vehicles will have to bypass the construction site on a small scale via the Wörth.

However, this is only possible for passenger cars and vans up to 7.5 tons in weight.

Larger vehicles require a special permit from the road traffic office in order to be allowed to drive from the Karlwirtskreuzung to the Obere Hauptstraße during this time.

In contrast to Untere Hauptstraße, the introduction of limited delivery times for Bahnhofstraße and Obere Hauptstraße is not planned according to the current decision of the city council.

Only two words were enough for Mayor Bönig to put this statement into perspective: "not yet".

Work is also going on in the side streets

In addition to the two major construction sites Bahnhofstraße and Obere Hauptstraße/Marienplatz, further measures are planned for 2023 as part of the Freising city center redevelopment, especially in the side streets.

The heating network will be expanded in Laubenbräugasse (until the end of April) and Oberen Domberggasse (April to August).

Divisional work (gas, water and electricity) is pending from May to September in Oberer Graben and Jägerwirtsgasse.

Gas and water pipes will also be renewed in the Unteren Graben, and the heating network will also be expanded there from March to July.
