Just as the Jews in Magdala risked their lives to save the Torah book, so 160 thousand in a demonstration in Kaplan say to the government: if necessary, we will block your way, and we will not allow you to do as you please

The last weekend gave me an exciting experience, which connected yesterday and now in a powerful way.

On Friday at dusk, 3 Badr, the date on which according to tradition the Second Temple was dedicated, with the breeze playing on the bamboo canes on the banks of the Sea of Galilee, we arrived at the ancient Magdala.

There, a few years ago, during work done by a Catholic priest, who wanted to build a hotel for pilgrims on the banks of the Sea of Galilee, the remains of the synagogue, which dates back to 29 AD and is the oldest in the Galilee, were uncovered.

The date, researcher Yasaka Harani told us, was determined by a coin found at the site during the excavations.

However, the coin and the rare mosaic are secondary to the amazing find that was discovered in the excavations - a large stone, carved on all sides, on which, according to archaeologists, the Torah book was placed during the prayer.

On the sides of the same stone, which actually depicts the temple, the seven-caned menorah is carved and on both sides of it are two oil jugs.

This finding gave validity to the fact that this is a synagogue that preceded the destruction in 70 AD.

Stone benches were found around the walls of the synagogue that were used by the worshippers.

Women and men prayed together, the researchers estimate, since no sign of women's help was found at the site.

And this is the connection to our current situation: luckily, the site in Magdala is on private land, where a beautiful hotel owned by a Catholic priest is managed.

If not, it is assumed that it would not have been possible to visit the site on Shabbat and the original stone that is placed in the hotel lobby, and the other findings.

All the more so if the ultra-Orthodox factions succeed in passing the laws, which are broadly referred to as "preservation of Jewish character", since the RTG websites will be closed on Shabbat.

A neighborhood was built next to the synagogue in Gamla.

The end of the road from the neighborhood to the synagogue is blocked by basalt columns, on which you can clearly see marble capitals, identical to those preserved inside the synagogue.

According to the archaeologists' estimates, this is related to the siege imposed by the Romans on the city of Magdala, which was a large provincial city.

The people of the city took the columns and cornices from the synagogue, to block the way and not allow the Romans to reach the synagogue and destroy it.

Even today there is a tangible and immediate danger to our lifestyles.

The legal revolution threatens to destroy the fabric of life and the way of conduct we have known until now.

A considerable part of the people stands up and stands as a wall in a way against the attempt to destroy our roots.

Just as the Jews there took columns from the synagogue, with the aim of saving the Torah book, the synagogue and life itself - so 160 thousand in a demonstration in Kaplan and tens of thousands more in various places throughout the country say to the government: if necessary, we will uproot the columns from our homes, we will block your way, And we will not allow you to do as you please.

So, it didn't help.

The Romans besieged the land and managed to suppress every rebellion that stood in their way.

Destroyed and smashed, and the people of Israel were expelled to find out from where they returned to their country only after 2,000 years.

The ancient synagogue in Magdala, which in my opinion is a must visit for all Israelis, is the sight that should be presented to the country's leaders - either you will destroy everything, or you will choose to save the house.

It's in your hands.
