For many seniors, the pension is barely enough to live on.

However, there are some grants that sufferers can apply for this year.

Munich – Inflation and rising food and energy prices are making it increasingly difficult for retirees to make ends meet.

However, those affected can at least secure a few grants from the state or health and nursing care insurance companies.

An overview:

Pension subsidy: Wohngeld Plus

From January 2023, the housing benefit plus will be paid out, which can also be applied for by pensioners.

In contrast to housing benefit, the average monthly support increases to 370 euros.

The amount of the payout is based on housing costs compared to income and local housing costs.

If about 40 percent of the income has to be spent on rent, it is advisable to apply for housing benefit.

In addition, a heating subsidy can be applied for, which was previously 50 percent.

The Federal Ministry of Housing has a housing allowance calculator on its website.

basic security

Pensioners who receive less than 853 euros per month can apply for basic security in addition to housing benefit.

Those affected can apply for basic security both in old age and, for example, in the event of a complete disability.

You can apply for basic security at the responsible social welfare office.

You need to bring your ID card, the pension notice, proof of income and assets, and proof of social security.

However, the application can also be submitted to the Deutsche Rentenversicherung, which will then forward it to the appropriate office.

Pension subsidy: burden subsidy

Pensioners with their own house can apply for a load subsidy.

Several factors play a role in determining the amount of the subsidy.

  • The number of people in the household

  • total household income

  • Amount of the eligible charges for the owner-occupied home.

If you have taken out a loan to finance your home, you can claim the repayment as housing costs.

Pension subsidy: basic pension and allowance

Anyone who has paid into the pension fund for at least 35 years and earned less than 80 percent of the average income during their working life is entitled to a basic pension supplement.

This does not have to be applied for, but is automatically credited to the account.

Anyone who has paid into the pension fund for less than 35 years receives at least part of the supplement.

The allowance of 251 euros is available to everyone who has collected at least 33 basic pension periods and whose pension is 515 euros.

Social welfare office helps with personal contribution in the nursing home

If pensioners do not receive enough pension to cover the costs of their own share in the nursing home, the social welfare office can cover the costs.

However, all income and other assets must be used before receiving support from the office.

Only assets may be kept by those affected.
