The workshop organized by the Syrian Trust for Development, the Living Heritage Program in Aleppo today, focused on the damage to the city's archaeological heritage as a result of the earthquake and the practical measures to restore it.

The workshop, titled “The Citadel of Aleppo Embraces its People,” and hosted by the Saif al-Dawla Minaret in Old Aleppo, dealt with axes on the concept of tangible and intangible heritage, especially al-Shahba, which is registered within the World Heritage Sites, and the relationship of this concept to society, development, and the mutual influence between them.

The workshop, which was held on the sidelines of the visit of the delegation of the UNESCO Regional Office in Beirut to the city of Aleppo, presented proposals for ways to improve the status of the ancient city in cooperation with all partners from the local community, associations, the Aga Khan Foundation, technicians, government agencies, and faculties of architecture and antiquities, with the aim of restoring the glory of this city, restoring it and investing it in the right way.

The participants in the workshop stressed the need to lift the sanctions and the blockade on the cultural and heritage sector in Syria, because culture is for all humanity, and it is an economic engine and source of livelihood for many craftsmen and practitioners in the city of Aleppo.

Reem Al-Ibrahim, from the Living Heritage Program at the Syrian Trust for Development, stated in a statement to SANA reporter that the workshop was held based on the role of the Trust in preserving the Syrian cultural identity throughout the country, and in the city of Aleppo, which was damaged by the earthquake, which caused destruction in many parts of the castle and in the surrounding archaeological monuments. In and out of the old city.

She pointed out that the participants in the workshop concluded the need for joint action to restore and rehabilitate the old city of Aleppo, especially the Citadel, which is a fundamental pillar in the rehabilitation process, and to involve young people in the labor sector to manage the sites and listen to their views.

Ahmed Kubba, the supervisor of economic projects at the Syrian Trust for Development, explained that the workshop is the first step to start the restoration process of the Citadel of Aleppo and its surroundings and the archaeological monuments in the city after the earthquake occurred, to revive markets and heritage places, and to stress the need to intensify societal efforts with the Municipality, and to proceed to carry out restoration operations of the castle in cooperation. With UNESCO and develop a phased plan to organize the work.
