Regarding the decision to bury him in Israel, the brother said: "He was killed on the way to the wedding. We thought it would be right to bury him in Israel, because of his connection to Israel. This is what he would have wanted. It felt appropriate."
Uncle Dov said: "He came to Israel after high school for a study program. He loved Israel very much. He felt that he wanted to stay and be connected to the country. He was very connected to our family. He wanted to enlist and then he went to the studio for five months. He came back to us, he was a family member. He wanted to enlist in intelligence but it didn't work out. He served in Tel Hashomer. He felt he had contributed.
"The family does not live in Israel, but they know quite well what is happening here. They were not afraid of terrorism. They were not afraid. They were worried like any parent who lives far from their children. They wanted to let Ilan do what he felt. They did not try to return him to the United States . They wanted to let him contribute to the state," he said sadly.
"He was on his way to his friend's wedding. He came to Israel for the wedding but it was also an excuse to visit friends from the army and to visit us. I spoke to him yesterday. We talked about him coming to us on Saturday. They were walking in the hexagon pool and I told him to take care of himself and he said he would take care of himself ", he rememberd.

The current murder took place a day after the murder of the brothers Hillel Weigel Yaniv in Hawara in Judea and Samaria.
