INTERVIEW – With her partner Storm Reid, the star actress of the HBO series talks about the poetic and tragic night at the mall at the heart of episode 7, which transposes an emblematic moment from the game.

Love in the Age of Zombies.

Who would have believed it ?

In a few iconic episodes, HBO's

The Last Of Us

has proven to have a blue flower soul.

After the improbable meeting and settling of a survivalist and an artist survivor at the heart of episode 3, the section, posted online this Monday, reserved a story of the origins and a moving first love for its heroine rebel, Ellie.

His interpreter Bella Ramsey, discovered in

Game of Thrones

, and his partner Storm Reid, starring in the thriller

Missing

, deliver their filming memories.

LE FIGARO.

This episode tackles a key moment in Ellie's life and tackles her secret garden.

How did you feel filming it?

Bella Ramsey.

From my video game research, I knew this was a pivotal moment.

I fervently hoped that the series would retain it.

These first emotions between Ellie and Riley are filled with confusion, uncertainty and awkwardness.

In an apocalyptic world, emotions are fragile.

But their devotion never wavers.

Reading Craig Mazin's script transported me.

Such a poetic, beautiful episode.

I had only one question in my mouth: who was going to play Riley?

If it hadn't been for Storm Reid, I'm not sure the result would have been up to snuff.

Storm Reid.

The script stunned me even if I was a little lost between the Fedra, the Fireflies and the infected, ignorant of the universe of

The Last Of Us

.

I had never touched the game. It was crucial to respect the innocence, the friendship and the affection that Riley and Ellie share and to keep intact the generosity and the freshness of this first love.

I was honored to play a teenager in love with another teenager.

With this origin story, we discover how Ellie was bitten.

She had been very vague on the subject when Tess had asked her the question at the beginning of the series.

BR It's an incredibly painful memory.

It was far too early to know if she could trust Joel and Tess.

That would have brought a flurry of questions and reopened wounds that were too fresh.

She repressed everything and closed in on herself.

There is also a part of her that likes to maintain mystery and arouse dread and admiration.

This stroll through the mall is surreal.

What did the set look like?

BR It was the best way to get my bearings with Storm!

It was fascinating to see this abandoned building on the outskirts of Calgary (Canada, editor's note) become this shopping center.

We really enjoyed trying all the video games in the arcade.

We also talked a lot about the state of mind of our characters.

I loved playing a more carefree even childlike Ellie, who has this massive crush.

A little light in this journey to the end of darkness.

In contact with Riley, Ellie regains her innocence.

The loss of Riley turns her into a survivor and gives her her first shell.

SR The hardest thing physically was the fight scene with the clapper.

Bella and I really had to coordinate our stunts.

Emotionally, what took the most energy out of me was the confrontation at the Tacos stand when Riley reveals that tonight is actually goodbye.

She hurts Ellie.

Suddenly, Riley brings to life her best friend's nightmare: being abandoned.

My heart was in shreds just thinking about it.

BR The stuntman who camped the clapper chained the energy drinks.

Like shots.

He was empty.

Storm Reid guided me and overwhelmed me with her tears.

How do you explain the enthusiasm around the series?

BR The heart of the series and the action is the relationship of complicity and trust that is woven between Joel and Ellie.

The pandemic, the infected, the clickers are just a backdrop, certainly cruel and ruthless, but the main thing is elsewhere.

It is this stunning juxtaposition that is so unique.

I also appreciate that the series highlights two LGBT romances, between Frank and Bill, between Ellie and Riley.

It is completely unexpected but overwhelming.

A true mirror of our society and a very strong symbol for many young people and members of the community.
