Despite inflation, household consumption rebounded in January, INSEE said on Tuesday morning.
It "
increased markedly over one month
", specifies the national statistics institute, at +1.5% in volume after -1.6% in December 2022.
A rebound which "
is mainly explained by the sharp increase in energy consumption
", notes INSEE (+4% after -0.8% in December 2022), which concerns both electricity, gas and fuels.
With regard to expenditure on electricity and gas, the increase is an exceptional "
backlash from the
energy check
" paid to 12 million households between the end of December and the beginning of 2023. Because "
the actual consumption of households in electricity and gas is down in January
,” says INSEE.

Consumption of manufactured goods also increased, by 1.3%, after a drop of 1.7% in December 2022, driven by consumption of durable goods (mainly household goods, in particular telephones).
In terms of food, consumption also rebounded, after several months of declines, but more slightly (+0.6% after -1.9% in December 2022).
“
This partial rebound is explained by the increase in the consumption of agricultural products and agri-food products
”, explains INSEE, adding that “
tobacco consumption is decreasing again
”.
