In the space of seven weeks, Johanna Rolland, the PS mayor of Nantes, split two press releases relating to the question of security in her city.

Each time, his position follows the crime figures released by the Loire-Atlantique prefecture.

Sign that the stake is important.

It must be said that last fall, a series of dramatic and sordid miscellaneous events, including the rape, by two individuals, of a woman who was returning from an evening with friends or the discovery of the partially charred body of an 18-year-old boy, had shone the spotlight on the City of the Dukes and brought a thousand inhabitants to the streets to denounce the situation.

First episode: on January 7, the city councilor mentioned “favorable trends” in rebound to data from state services for the period from September to December 2022. The second salvo dates from February 24.

This time, Johanna Rolland, mentions

“encouraging results in recent months”

following the release of the results of the past year by the new prefect of the department, Fabrice Rigolet-Roze.

During his presentation, the senior official had divided the year 2022 into two distinct periods.

If he had qualified the second part of the year as

“positive”

, he had also mentioned a

“first part of the year where the figures are more misdirected”

.

Reality of the figures and feelings of the inhabitants

For Johanna Rolland, who therefore seems more interested in the glass half full, the recent improvement in the situation is particularly linked to a

“police presence”

which

“is visible”

.

In this, she refers to the arrival, last October, of reinforcements, in this case 70 national police officers and a CRS company.

In addition to the figures from the State, the mayor of Nantes, relies on the feelings of

“traders and inhabitants”

met

“in the city center and in all the districts of Nantes”

to say that there is better.

Despite this improvement, the elected official says she advocates

“vigilance”

and

“prudence”

because the battle against delinquency

“is won over time”

.

To win it, she insists in particular on

“the joint action of the police forces”

which translates on the ground by a reinforced cooperation between national police, municipal police, metropolitan transport police and urban supervision center.

Justice, “a weak link”

Using an almost similar vocabulary in these two press releases, Johanna Rolland takes advantage of her last missive to put pressure on the Ministry of Justice again.

“Security is all the links in a chain and each link is important: education, prevention, mediation, repression and punishment.

I insist on this point because one of the weak links today everywhere in France and in Nantes in particular, it is clearly the means of justice”,

she writes.

On February 22, the mayor of Nantes co-signed with three parliamentarians from Loire-Atlantique (MP Mounir Belhamiti and senators Ronan Dantec and Laurence Garnier) a text for the attention of the Keeper of the Seals, Éric Dupond-Moretti.

In it, the elected officials asked him to

"take into account the emergency situation"

of the Nantes court faced with

"delays of around 18 months"

to render a decision and forced to cancel many hearings for lack of magistrates available.

Since then, the Minister of Justice, announced Monday, February 27, as part of a trip to local justice in Reims, that four assistant lawyers were going to be recruited at the Nantes court.

As for the magistrates, no announcement was made despite promises that would have been made by Éric Dupond-Moretti to Mounir Belhamiti.
