The anger of Iker Casillas for the award of the Argentines in The Best 2023: "There are things that I do not understand"

2023-02-28T12:58:23.913Z

The former goalkeeper posted an enigmatic tweet after the FIFA ceremony. A history of fights against the awards and rancor with Messi.

Iker Casillas, the former goalkeeper of the Spanish team,

published an enigmatic tweet in which

he protested against the awards linked to soccer,

just hours after the ceremony of

The Best

, where Argentina took a trophy poker.

Lionel Messi, voted the best in the world;

Emiliano Martínez, best goalkeeper;

Lionel Scaloni, best coach;

and even the tide of Argentines who sang "Muchachos" throughout the month in Qatar won the prize for the best fans of the year.

Casillas, World Cup champion with Spain in 2010, retired from football in 2020. In between, he had a decade of spicy crosses with Lionel Messi when he defended Real Madrid's goal.

The Argentine scored 17 goals against him

in all those matches, leaving him sprawled on the ground in several of them.

"

There are things I don't understand about this soccer awards…

" Casillas wrote on his Twitter account, where he has close to 10 million followers.

Within a few minutes, the responses were filled with Argentines asking him "to stop crying."

It is that although Casillas did not specify what bothered him about The Best ceremony, the goalkeeper has a history of tantrums against award ceremonies.

Including some against Messi.

In 2021, for example, the goalkeeper

had complained when Messi was awarded his seventh Ballon d'Or.

"It is increasingly difficult for me to believe in this about football awards. For me, Messi is one of the 5 best players in the whole story but you have to start knowing how to classify who are the most prominent after a season. It's not that difficult, damn it! Others make it difficult," he wrote at the time.

It was when Lionel won the shortlist against Robert Lewandowski, in a delivery that was marked by the pandemic that interrupted the season.

The Pole was a candidate to win the award in 2020, which was cut short by Covid-19.

In 2019, when Messi had won his first

The Best

award ,

he had also protested against the rules.

"Van Dijk was the best player for UEFA. Messi was the best for FIFA. Imagine: Cristiano (merits he does for it) wins the GOLDEN BALL, it would seem to me that the guidelines we follow in football to give prizes do not make much sense, Did not say.

Last year he also complained when Thibaut Courtois was not on the shortlist of three nominees for the Ball.

"That's the BEST GOALKEEPER in the WORLD. I still

don't understand what those who choose this award are based on

," he wrote.

Casillas, with a great career in goal,

was never nominated for any individual award.

It is that since FIFA implemented The

Best

award for the best goalkeeper, his golden years had already passed.

At that time, Keylor Navas had already displaced him from the three sticks at Merengue and was playing for Porto.

Yes, he was the goalkeeper of the FIFA ideal 11 between 2008 and 2012. There he did not complain.

Since his sports retirement, Casillas has remained linked to the world of soccer.

Last year he was one of the commentators on Spanish television during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. There some of his interventions went viral in which it was made clear that he was not amused that Messi kept going.

Outside of football, in November of last year Casillas was nominated by TikTok Spain as one of the best public figures.

This one didn't win either.
