These images are meant to scare.

They show the transfer of around 2,000 prisoners to a newly opened "mega-prison" in El Salvador.

The staging is dedicated to the fight against gang crime proclaimed by Head of State Nayib Bukele.

'This will be their new house, where they will live for decades;

unable to do any more harm to the population,” Bukele wrote on Twitter on Friday.

The prison is said to have space for 40,000 prisoners, making it the largest prison in the Americas.

850 soldiers and police officers are to guard the 165 hectare area.

El Salvador's parliament declared a state of emergency about a year ago at Bukele's urging.

Since then, the authorities in the country have arrested more than 64,000 suspects - some without an arrest warrant.

Authorities also have access to private communications - and inmates have no right to legal assistance.

According to human rights organizations, innocent people were arrested as part of the crackdown.

Dozens are said to have died in police custody.

But Bukele's policies are mostly popular among the residents of El Salvador - people are apparently longing for more security and a reduction in rampant gang crime.

According to its own statement, the government intends to continue with its approach.

Only on Monday evening was there talk of 30,000 other criminals.
