A man has been arrested on suspicion of falsely claiming to have been diagnosed with the new coronavirus in order to obtain free oral medication.

The police received a referral from the Department of Health earlier, saying that some people suspected of falsely claiming to have "coronavirus disease 2019" to a private doctor, so as to obtain free oral drugs for the new crown.

After an in-depth investigation by members of the first team of the Tseung Kwan O Serious Crime Squad, a 63-year-old man surnamed Chen was arrested in Tseung Kwan O District yesterday (27th) on suspicion of "fraud".

The investigation revealed that the arrested person was suspected of seeking medical treatment in nine private clinics within two days, and was prescribed a total of nine doses of oral drugs for the new crown.

The arrested person is being detained for enquiries.

The police pointed out that the operation is still in progress, and it is not ruled out that more people will be arrested. They also emphasized that fraud is a serious crime. Once convicted, the maximum penalty is 14 years in prison. Citizens should not try their best.

The government stated today (28th) that some suspicious records of oral drug prescriptions for the new crown were discovered through the eHealth system earlier, including patients who obtained oral drugs for the new crown supplied by the government from multiple private doctors within a short period of time. Transfer to law enforcement for further follow-up investigation.

The government reminds the public not to resell or give the new crown oral medicine to others, or try to use improper means to obtain the new crown oral medicine.

Anyone who illegally possesses, sells or resells new crown oral medicines, including free supply, is against the law.

Using improper means to obtain oral drugs for the new crown may also commit related criminal offenses and may be sentenced to imprisonment.
