UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres arrived in Iraq for his first visit in six years, with the aim of
"supporting efforts"
towards peace, his spokesman announced Tuesday in New York.
"The Secretary General is there to reaffirm the UN's commitment to support Iraq's efforts to move towards peace, human rights and sustainable development for all Iraqis," said Stéphane Dujarric in a statement

Antonio Guterres, who landed overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday in Baghdad, is due to meet with Prime Minister Mohamed Chia al-Soudani, as well as with representatives of groups defending the rights of women and young people.
On Thursday, he will visit a camp for displaced people in the north of the country, before going to Erbil to meet with representatives of the regional government of Iraqi Kurdistan.
His last visit to the country dates back to spring 2017.
He will then go to Qatar, in particular for the summit of the Least Developed Countries.
