On the first anniversary of the Russian invasion, Jesús A. Núñez Villaverde analyzes which of the two sides is better prepared to achieve victory if the conflict becomes entrenched

Friday, February 24, marked one year since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

And 12 months after the war broke out, there is nothing to indicate that it may end any time soon.

If the conflict becomes entrenched, there will be several factors that will influence the ability of both sides to achieve victory.

Jesús A. Núñez Villaverde, co-director of the Institute for Studies on Conflicts and Humanitarian Action (IECAH), responds in the video that accompanies this news item to the question of who has more options to win a long war, Russia or Ukraine.

"Neither of the two sides is thinking of sitting down to negotiate any type of agreement, because both Ukraine and Russia continue to consider that they still have room to improve their current positions through military means," explains Villaverde.

In the recording, the expert details the conditions of one and the other in terms of their economic capacity, their military capacity, their recruitment capacity and their internal and international support.

“Moscow is not alone”

According to the specialist, Russia should theoretically have an advantage, since its economy has been less affected despite the sanctions (Ukraine has suffered the physical destruction of many of its essential infrastructures), its Army and its military industry are much larger ( despite the fact that Ukraine's weapons are more modern), it has many more people to mobilize, and although it has much less international support, Putin does not have to fear any internal opposition and the support or neutrality of allies such as China, Iran or Belarus may be enough to resist external pressures.

"He continues to have countries that will help him to at least say that he is not alone and that he also has other ties and other relationships that allow him to survive," Villaverde concludes.
