A shortage of tomatoes in the kingdom has led pizzerias and restaurants to turn to creative solutions in preparing the flagship Italian dishes • Restaurateurs in the country even warn that they are on the verge of collapse and are forced to remove the dishes from the menu

A shortage of tomatoes, among other things, for making pizzas and pastas sounds almost like a horror scenario in the culinary world - but the severe shortage of agricultural produce in the world, along with rising commodity prices, have meant that many restaurants do have to find creative substitutes for favorite dishes in order to continue to survive.

One of the countries that suffered a severe blow from high prices of tomatoes and the difficulty of obtaining them in the market, is Great Britain.

According to a report published a few days ago on The Guardian website, many restaurants and pizzerias throughout the kingdom are forced to significantly cut down on the use of tomatoes and even report that they are on the verge of collapse due to this.

Tomatoes are among the main victims of the current wave in Britain as part of a severe shortage of vegetables and fruits in the world.

This crisis is influenced, among other things, by the extreme weather and high electricity prices.

The price of a box of tomatoes in the Kingdom, it was reported, rose from 5 pounds sterling to 20 pounds sterling.

The price of a box of Amir canned tomatoes is also from 15 pounds sterling to 30 pounds sterling.

Alongside the challenge of rising prices, the crisis has also left UK supermarket shelves almost empty of the raw material.

As mentioned according to the report, restaurant owners and representatives of culinary organizations warn that the shortage of the red fruit may lead to bankruptcy and closure of Italian restaurants throughout the British Kingdom.

This is while the existing ones try to find substitutes for tomatoes in the Italian flagship dishes or, alternatively, remove the dishes from the menu.

To replace the tomatoes in the pasta and pizza dishes, they apply a method they call the "whitening method".

Here, it is not just about traditional bianca pizzas ("white pizzas" without tomato sauce) or pastas based on olive oil (olive oil and garlic) and cream, but the use of raw materials that may be a substitute for tomatoes, such as various vegetables such as zucchini and eggplant, which are used To thicken the sauces, or cheeses such as ricotta.
