However, one journalist was amazed by the price of two bottles of water from the restaurant.

Munich - Munich is not the cheapest city.

This is not only reflected in the rents and the search for accommodation in Munich, but also in the prices in the restaurants.

The American journalist Alec MacGillis was amazed when he saw the bill for a meal with Boris Becker from the Käfer in Prinzregentenstraße, because he couldn't believe the price of the water

Nobel restaurant Käfer in Munich: High price for water

Boris Becker spoke

about his time in prison, his family and money in an interview with the

Financial Times .

Meanwhile, the journalist responsible, Henry Mance, took him out to the Käfer tavern on Prinzregentenstrasse.

Occasionally, Mance's article touches on food, but it's consistently secondary.

The bill made the journalist Alec MacGillis suspicious.

He writes for ProPublica, among others, and is the author of the book "Fulfillment - America in the Shadow of Amazon".

Upon publication, MacGillis' attention was drawn to the two bottles of water on the bill and their price.

Michael Käfer's restaurant charged EUR 23.80 for two bottles of water, which corresponds to EUR 11.90 per bottle.

MacGillis was so amazed that he posted the bill online.

His followers shared his point of view, but also joked about the prices.

They asked MacGillis in the comments if the water contained gold pieces or was holy water.

Munich: Rising drink prices in restaurants

In response to an inquiry from

tz.de

, the restaurant confirmed that this was not a calculation error on the part of the restaurant.

The two bottles of water actually cost 23.80 euros together.

Many restaurants generate a large portion of their sales from drinks rather than food.

In order to cover the rising costs, beverage prices were increased by an average of 50 cents last year.

According to the consumer index, prices for non-alcoholic beverages rose by 8.2 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year.

A bottle of water now costs more than eight euros in many Munich pubs and restaurants.

The bottle of water in the Käfer comes close to the prices for a beer at the Oktoberfest.

A beer at Oktoberfest 2022 cost between 12.60 and 13.80 euros.

Bill: A "Becker-esque tip"

When the interview with the tennis legend ended, the journalist himself said a few words about the bill.

In the end, the journalist Henry Mance paid 230 euros for the meal with Boris Becker.

He also specifically mentioned in his article that he miscalculated and gave a "Becker-esque tip" of 30 percent.

So the actual price was around 177 euros.

Only recently did an era come to an end in the Käfer when, after 40 years, the Bavarian dinner for the security conference was no longer held in the restaurant.

Michael Käfer naturally hopes that the old tradition will return to his tavern.

But that won't become apparent until next year's security conference in Munich.
