2023-03-01T09:40:30.945Z

The bird, a species of black-faced humpback that weighs only about 17 grams, usually nests in Southeast Asia, was recorded for the first time in Israel in 2021 • Its arrival in our region may be the first clue to the development of new bird migration patterns

Extremely rare documentation:

for only the second time in Israel, last week a bird of the black-faced wagtail species was recorded, a small songbird weighing only about 17 grams.

The documentation was carried out as part of a research activity conducted on the Carmel beach by Chen Faivish, a senior ornithologist from the Nili and David Jerusalem Bird Research Station.

Fevish identified the bird in the field, but the identification was not certain, however a recording of the calls the bird made in the field led to the confirmation of the identification and a successful attempt to locate it again a few days later, this time using fog nets, which are used to drown birds.

Dr. Yosef Khayat, director of the drowning center at the Society for the Protection of Nature, who also participated in the drowning of the rare gabton, said: "During the drowning, we attach marking rings to the birds' legs for research purposes.

After the gabion was captured, it was marked with an identification ring, measured, weighed, photographed and released back into the wild.

Later, it was documented again by other birders who came from all over the country to witness the rare visitor."

The Society for the Protection of Nature adds that the black-faced hornbill is a small songbird that nests in eastern Siberia, northern Mongolia and northeastern China.

These humpbacks leave frozen Siberia in the winter months and normally spend the cold season in Southeast Asia, mainly in southern China, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar, where more favorable conditions prevail at this time of the year.

"This species, like other Siberian species, has a well-known history of abnormal appearances from the normal migration field, in areas where they are not expected to be found, mainly in Western Europe," added Fevish.

"Just in the last month, the second individual was recorded for Spain and the eighth for England. These unusual individuals, also known as 'occasionals', may be the first clue to the development of new bird migration patterns. It is especially exciting to meet a bird that has traveled thousands of kilometers from where it should be."

"Extremely exciting".

The first time a black-faced goshawk was captured in Israel was by the team of the Emek Hefer Bird Research Station, on October 31, 2021. "One of the biggest challenges in preserving migratory birds is the fact that they divide their annual cycle over large geographical areas, shared by many countries. The Ornithology Center of the Society for the Protection of Nature works to preserve moist habitats, which are used by birds from around the world - only through a global effort can we preserve these migratory species," concludes Dr. Yoav Perlman, Director of the Ornithology Center of the Society for the Protection of Nature.
